Flemish School17th Century Flemish Old Master Oil on Oak Panel - Head of Christ
Museum quality, exceptionally fine early 17th century Flemish Old Master oil painting. The painting depicts the head of Christ. Painted in oils on oak wood panel, the face of Christ is depicted on a dark background with the head elements of a golden nimbus. On the right, we see the letters in gilt finish painting "H. H.", and below "X.E". On the reverse, an old label numbered '538' and a further, indistinct label. The numbers would have once referred to an old collection inventory. The face of Christ, seen from the front, with the soft beard, on a neutral background, derives from the old representations related to the tradition Veil of Saint Veronica. The present composition, similar to those made in the 14th and 15th centuries, is typical of the Flemish tradition and can be compared to some models of the Bruges School, including the Saint Véronique by Hans Memling (circa 1480) of the National Gallery in Washington. (See catalog of the exhibition Il volto di Cristo, Rome, Palazzo delle Esposizioni, IV Veronica, pp.103 - 211. December 2000 - April 2001). This represents a very rare and unique opportunity to acquire such an important and early work. We commend it highly to the most discerning of collectors.
