About the Item
Titled "Iron Tail and Sam Lone Bear" this large-format oil on canvas by contemporary Lithuanian painter Gabija Pritkovaite is dedicated to native Americans.
In her paintings, young artist is questioning our state of being in today‘s world, by painting images that nonetheless reminds us of something, but are impossible to trace. These images refer to painting as a medium of memory, which is constantly re-questioning itself on the optically illusory surface of the painting. Meanwhile, the surface of the painting evokes a sense of time, which places us in reality with ourselves.
"I speak in images about images — they are timeless in the virtual world. We consume them, and through them, we rehearse ourselves — our memory." For the artist, the Native Americans represent a distance necessary for self-perception - sculptures of memory in the archive of lost things. Painting their image on canvas becomes a simulated longing for Indigenous heroes.
Gabija Pritkovaitė (b. 1998) lives and works in Vilnius. From 2018 to 2024, she earned both her BA and MA in Painting from the Vilnius Academy of Arts. She is part of the new generation of Lithuanian painters, actively exhibiting in group shows and competitions. In 2023, she received first place in the Zabolis Art Prize and was awarded the Justinas Vienožinskis Scholarship in 2020.
Due to its large scale, we recommend shipping the artwork removed from its stretcher bars (included separately) to reduce shipping costs. The painting is in excellent condition. A Certificate of Origin issued by the gallery, signed by both the artist and the gallery, is included with the work.
Artwork was featured at Zabolis Art Prize contest finalists’ exhibition, held at the Vilnius Academy of Arts exhibition hall “Titanikas.”

Pritkovaitė treats the painted surface as both a visual and conceptual space, where memory and presence continuously shift and overlap. Through this approach, she reflects on the instability of images and the role of painting in negotiating contemporary states of being.
