George Harcourt
Muriel, Cynthia and George by George Harcourt

1870-1918

$124,500

About

Capturing childhood innocence at its most pristine is this monumental, original oil painting by important Scottish portraitist George Harcourt. With his soft, fluid brushwork and a vibrant color palette, the artist presents these siblings with the utmost sincerity. The painting depicts Muriel, Cynthia and George Perkins – their family being prominent members of British society. Harcourt utilizes bright colors and a keen eye for detail to compose this nostalgic and touching scene. The trio walk the path along a stream through verdant foliage highlighted by beautiful pastel blooms. The oldest daughter guides her brother with one hand on his shoulder, while the second daughter holds his hand. This physical connection reflects the emotional bond between the three, adding a deeper emotional element to this already sentimental work of art. Renowned for his portraits focusing upon the British elite, Harcourt's oeuvre is dominated by some of the most picturesque and photorealistic portraits ever composed, of which the present work can be counted. His thoughtful treatment of his subjects, particularly children, made Harcourt one of the most sought-after portraitists of the British upper class. Harcourt received his formal training at the Herkomer School of Art, located just north of London, from 1889 to 1892. By 1893, his showings at the Royal Academy brought him considerable praise, and he eventually went on to become an associate (ARA) in 1919, an Academician (RA) in 1926, a senior Academician in 1944 and finally Director of the Royal Academy thereafter. He also served as Vice-President of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters from 1934 until 1945 when he was elected President. Today, Harcourts works are well represented in the collections of London's Royal Academy of Arts, the National Portrait Gallery and the Watford Museum.
