About the Item

This is a captivating portrait of Samuela Bergsma, executed by the Swiss artist Gottardo Segantini. Painted in the Divisionist style, the artwork emanates a mesmerising play of luminosity and translucency. Gottardo Segantini, the eldest son of the renowned painter Giovanni Segantini, brings his unique perspective to life in this splendid artwork. Hailing from the picturesque landscapes of Pusiano near Brianza in the province of Como, Segantini's artistic journey led him to Switzerland, where he settled in Savognin in 1882 and later in Maloja in 1894. Embarking on a quest for knowledge, Segantini went to the Accademia di Brera in 1899 before his pursuits took him to Zurich. There, at the esteemed Technical University (now ETH), he delved into the world of engineering, eventually mastering the intricate technique of etching. It was during these formative years that the spark of his artistic passion ignited, leading him to venture into the realm of painting in 1902. Segantini's artistic pilgrimage extended to the cultural hubs of Munich in 1902 and Berlin in 1904. It was in these vibrant artistic centers that he found guidance under the tutelage of the eminent painter and printmaker Emil Orlik. From 1902 until the end of the First World War he spent time in Maloja, and Zurich, spending the winters in Rome. A set of six of his etchings 'Engadina' was published in 1913 by Kurt Wolff in Leipzig in the large edition of 250. Many of his prints reproduced his father's paintings. The details of this work are as follows: Gottardo Segantini (Italian, 1882 - 1974) Portrait Of Samuela Bergsma, 1931 oil on canvas signed and dated ‘Gottardo / 1931’ (lower left), further inscribed and dated ‘Gottardo Segantini Maloja / 1931/ SamuelaBergsma’ (on the reline). 19.3/4 x 16 in.
