Painted by James T. BREEN, c. 1920, oil on canvas. This well executed copy of the famous painting by Thomas Sully (American born in England 1783-1872) portrait of his 9 year old son in 1820. Signed lower left J T Breen. James T. Breen was active/lived in Massachusetts and is known for commemorative portraits.
The painting in the image is a commemorative copy of "The Torn Hat," created by Thomas Sully in 1820. It depicts Sully's nine-year-old son, Thomas Wilcocks Sully, in an informal pose with a torn straw hat. The artwork is known for its fluid use of paint and the contrast between light and shadow.
Oil on canvas mounted on the original stretcher. Signed JT Breen lower right. Not framed.
