About the Item
Jean BURKHALTER (1895-1982)
The Painter, circa 1925
Brown wash, highlights of white gouache on board
48 × 32 cm
Provenance : artist's workshop
Born in Auxerre (Burgundy, France) in 1895, Jean Burkhalter was a prolific designer, active in both the applied and plastic arts. He distinguished himself as a decorator, designer of silverware and fabric motifs, painter and drawing teacher. Painting remained his preferred medium.
Discharged in 1914, he entered the École nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs in 1915. After graduating in 1919, he exhibited at the Salon des artistes décorateurs, and also presented paintings at the Salon d'Automne and the Salon national des beaux-arts. In 1922, Jean Burkhalter was entrusted with the chair of drawing and composition at the Grenoble School of Industrial Art. During this period, he began a close collaboration with the Martel brothers. He designed furniture for the Printemps department stores, and also collaborated with Pierre Chareau. Returning to Paris in 1924, he was an active member of the Société des artistes décorateurs. In 1929, he participated in the creation of the U.A.M. (Union des Artistes Modernes), bringing together interior designers such as Robert Mallet-Stevens, Jean Prouvé, Charlotte Perriand and Le Corbusier. In particular, he created boldly shaped metal furniture made of enamelled tubes, rope or wicker.
In the 1930s, Jean Burkhalter turned more to painting. In 1934, his gouaches were exhibited alongside sculptures by the Martel brothers, to great critical acclaim. He then moved away from the decorative arts and the Parisian art scene, settling in his native town where he became director of the École municipale des beaux-arts, teaching drawing and composition.
For the 1937 World's Fair, the artist presented only paintings with allegorical subjects, and won a silver medal for his decorations for the Pavillon de la solidarité nationale, designed by Robert Mallet-Stevens. The following year, the town of Auxerre commissioned one of his largest sets for the Maison du peuple, today the Auxerre theater.
He continued his artistic career in Saint-Etienne, where he was appointed director of the Ecole régionale des beaux-arts in 1944, then in Limoges from 1946 to 1961.
