Jean-Gabriel Domergue was a French artist who claims himself to be “the inventor of the pin-up.” He studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, and was the curator for the Musée Jacquemart-André. In his lifetime, he was awarded the Prix de Rome, was named a fellow of the Academy of Fine Arts, and was knighted as part of the Legion of Honour.
He was most famous as a portrait artist, specifically of women, and almost exclusively represent bourgeois society’s delicately feminine faces. Women, fashion, and the romance of Paris at the turn of the twentieth century all fueled his oeuvre and artistic production.
The oil painting “Portrait of a Lady” well typifies Domergue’s unique and well-known form of representation. The woman is pictured against a bright, teal background that compliments the pink ruffles that engulf her neck. Her posture and anatomy is slim in a caricature-like way, with her right shoulder sloping downward and her wrist elegantly bent to allow her finger to fray out below her chin. Her face, too, is delicate, with a characteristic half-lidded nature to her eyes and her lips, colored red in a typical Domergue style, curved slightly upward. Her serene expression and feminine pose all point to her as a member of an elite, Parisian class that was asserting a new type of femininity emerging around Domergue in the 1910s and 1920s.

Jean-Gabriel Domergue
Jean-Gabriel Domergue was born in Bordeaux in 1889. As a talented and precocious young painter, Domergue was already exhibiting works at seventeen for the Salon Des Artistes Français in Paris. In 1913, he was awarded the prestigious Second Prize of Rome, later winning the gold medal in the 1920 show. Domergue painted over 3000 portraits during his lifetime, from nude portrayals of fashionable actresses and young dancers to prized aristocratic sitters, such as Liane de Pougy and Nadine, the Baroness of Rothschild. Domergue not only transformed the representation of women in paint, but held an important role in the evolution of women’s fashion in France from the 1930’s onwards, designing dresses and hats for numerous famous couturiers including Paul Poiret and Henry Marque. Domergue was made Knight of the Legion of Honour and a Fellow of the French Academy of Fine Arts.
