About the Item

JEFF CHESTER (b. 1976, CANADA) Born in Summerside, P.E.I., Jeff Chester completed a B.F.A. and a B.Sc. from the University of Guelph in 2001. After completing a B.Ed. the following year at Nipissing University, he taught high school art for a year in England. Chester then went on to spend the next ten years developing his technical painting skills while simultaneously working as a pilot in the Royal Canadian Air Force, an experience that brought him a very unique visual point of view. Since 2014, he is pursuing his career as a full-time painter. Chester creates figurative work with a formal focus on colour and design. Works from his current series, The Curious Object, pose questions concerning identity and contemporary portraiture. The compositions feature variations of a lone figure within a square format that one might typically see in a contemporary social media selfie. “I have tried to walk a line between illustration and photo-realist painting. Through this mixing of styles, I am alluding to the role of storytelling in the creation of our identities and lived realities. I also refer to Italian Renaissance portraiture by using the time-honored motif of a woman in a landscape. This is to create a contrast between the function of these earlier paintings and the goals of contemporary portraiture. In the not too distant future, thanks to automation, artificial intelligence and technological integration with our bodies, we will find that our identities will be challenged in profound ways. Who we think we are will become central to making meaning of our place in the world. The figures appearing in the work are based off of images of my wife. The repetition of the same face allows her to disappear into anonymity and become a stand in for the idea of a nonspecific person. At the same time, it allows me a chance to state my own view that love and human connection is of paramount importance. Who we are is entangled fundamentally with our relationships to others.”

Anubis Reimagined: Abstract Figurative Painting, Mythological & Surreal Themes
By Michele Mikesell
Located in Dallas, TX
This captivating oil painting by Michele Mikesell is a striking fusion of abstract and figurative styles, masterfully crafted on a large 51 x 38-inch canvas (130 x 97 cm). Titled "Anubis Reimagined", this piece embodies an evocative exploration of mythological and surreal themes. The central figure, elongated and adorned with a crown-like element, exudes an enigmatic presence, reminiscent of ancient Egyptian deities merged with contemporary abstract expressionism. The muted gray-green background, punctuated by delicate marks and textures, serves as a minimalist stage that accentuates the vivid colors and layered details within the figure. Subtle strokes of bold yellows, reds, and blues blend seamlessly with the raw textures, creating a sense of depth and intrigue. This artwork invites viewers to interpret its narrative while showcasing Mikesell’s signature style—a harmonious balance of mystery, abstraction, and symbolism. Perfect for collectors and art enthusiasts seeking a bold yet contemplative centerpiece, this painting complements modern, eclectic, and minimal interiors alike. Its large-scale format and compelling design make it ideal for gallery walls, luxury residences, or professional spaces. "Surrounded By Fuzzy Friends", Human Figure, Bedroom, Stuffed animals, games
Located in Philadelphia, PA
"Surrounded By Fuzzy Friends" is a piece by Akira Gordon made from acrylic and oil on canvas. This piece measures 48"h x 60"w unframed. Akira hopes to give black people images that they can relate to in some way without making an overt political statement; instead, showing figures in leisure, doing the mundane and the ordinary. She finds the most authentic way to do this is through self-portraiture and referencing her experiences. She uses herself as a reference for her paintings because she believes examining your own life is important. Her artworks delve into the complex emotions associated with her struggle to transition into adulthood while clinging to the familiarity of "childish" things. It's an introspective journey, an attempt to reconcile the inevitability of growing up with the desire to preserve the youthful spirit that continues to reside within her. Akira Gordon, a Philadelphia-born painter and recent graduate of the University of the Arts, is a captivating artist driven by a passion for contemporary art and self-portraiture. Inspired by Kerry James Marshall and Sasha Gordon...
