This 1940s oil on canvas portrait of a girl in a red dress is by Polish-American artist Jennings Tofel (1891-1959). Tofel was a New York painter who worked in the Expressionist style. He was friends with Georgia O'Keefe and Alfred Stieglitz, who helped him receive an art grant that allowed him to live and work in Paris in the 1920s. His work is in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian and the Whitney Museum of American Art.
Signed lower left. Framed in a contemporary wood frame with aubergine face and black sides.
