About the Item

Jessica Oliveras (b. 1991) is a Spanish visual artist whose work explores the intersection of the spiritual and physical realms through a unique blend of figuration and abstraction. Self-taught in painting, she was raised near Barcelona in an artistic family—her father a painter and her mother an art book director—nurturing her creative vision from an early age. Educated in nursing and midwifery at Middlesex University in London and the University of Girona, Jessica brings a profound sense of humanity and contemplation to her art. Her paintings often depict psychologically charged spaces where still, idolised figures emerge from dramatic, deconstructed backgrounds—evoking transcendence, transformation, and sacred intimacy within the everyday. She began her professional painting career in London, where she lived for eight years. She now lives and works between Barcelona and Napoli. Her work has been exhibited internationally in museums, galleries, and art fairs, including the MEAM in Barcelona, the CICA Museum in South Korea, and Artexpo New York. In 2025, her art will even travel to the Moon as part of NASA’s Lunar Codex project. Her paintings are held in private collections across Spain, Italy, the United Kingdom, the United States, Colombia, and the Czech Republic. She has received multiple awards, including being named a finalist in the ModPortrait and FIKVA awards, and has been featured in prominent art publications such as Realism Today, and The Guide Artists. Her evolving body of work continues to explore the sacred within the ordinary, inviting viewers into moments of quiet reflection and emotional depth. “My work is a visual exploration of the space between the physical and the spiritual, where the sacred and the intimate quietly converge. Through a balance of figuration and abstraction, I explore identity, presence, and transformation, drawing from personal experience and emotional memory. I'm especially interested in how the everyday can carry the sacred, offering moments of reverence and devotion through ordinary relationships. My process is deeply autobiographical and introspective. My paintings often have a collage-like quality, reflecting the complexity and layered nature of contemporary life. They serve as a way to make sense of external chaos, translating it into form and focus. Throughout my life, significant transitions have shaped my visual language. My experience as a midwife profoundly influenced my understanding of the human condition. Being present at the threshold of life taught me to view the body not only as physical, but also as symbolic. This perspective continues to inform my approach to the figure, which I see as a presence where power and vulnerability coexist. Living in London for many years, and later returning to my home country, led me to question ideas of perfectionism. As a result, the imperfect environments surrounding my figures—layered and deconstructed—reflect shifting internal states. Drapery, posture, and clothing take on quiet, ritualistic qualities. These gestures are not tied to formal religious doctrine but emerge as subtle signs of grace and emotional presence. The tensions within my work mirror the inner landscapes we all navigate: complex, dynamic, and often unresolved. Relocating to Naples brought these visual languages into sharper focus. Surrounded by religious imagery woven into everyday life, I became increasingly drawn to the ways visual culture and symbolism shape both collective and personal identity. This context deepened my interest in how devotion takes form—not only through spiritual practices, but also within relationships, shared spaces, and the small gestures that carry emotional weight.”
