About the Item
This 19.625" x 15.625" oil on canvas painting is by American artist, Jim Riley. The painting presents a frontal, half-length portrait of a figure with wavy brown hair and a calm, introspective gaze, rendered with expressive brushwork suggestive of figurative expressionism. The layering of pigments in the face and hair creates subtle chiaroscuro, lending dimensionality without rigid linearity. The figure's attire, a gray-and-black garment with possible formalwear allusions, anchors the composition with vertical elements, while the warm-gray, non-specific background evokes modernist spatial flattening. The ornate gilded frame offers a deliberate contrast to the gestural brushwork, referencing academic portrait traditions.
Jim Riley (1937-2015). Riley was born in Cleveland, Ohio, and graduated from Collinwood High School in 1956 where he was inducted into their Hall of Fame because of his numerous contributions to the arts. After graduation, Jim entered the Cleveland Institute of Art, graduating in 1960. Upon graduation, Jim worked for the American Greeting Card Company, Cleveland and Mosaic Tile Company in Zanesville, Ohio.
Mr. Riley was an accomplished portrait artist, and a member of the American Portrait Society, the Portrait Society of America, and the American and Philadelphia Watercolor Societies. He was a past president of the Lancaster County Art Association and was a long-time exhibitor at the Lititz Outdoor Art Show as well as various Lancaster, Pennsylvania galleries and shows.
