Joanne Tod
The Queen

2022

About the Item

Joanne Tod (b.1953) is a renowned Canadian artist and a master of figuration. Tod has depicted a wide range of subjects throughout her illustrious career. The human figure, pattern, and interiors have been reoccurring and essential elements of Tod's oeuvre. However over the last ten years, portraiture has become a significant part of her output, both high-profile commissions as well as more idiosyncratic self-initiated portraits, such as her recent installation of "head-shots" paintings of the entire Toronto Raptors team. While 2020 was a trying and destabilizing year around the world, for artists such as Joanne Tod, it resulted in an incredibly fruitful period. For most of Covid and beyond, Tod successfully experimented with watercolors. This unforgiving medium has enabled the artist to be more spontaneous without compromising the technical mastery she is known for. With a delicate hand, Tod captures the Queen's likeness in this intimate and uplifting, close-cropped portrait. While it's not the first time Tod has taken inspiration from the Queen (see another example from 1996), here we have a much more personal and friendly depiction of the subject. Portraying her sincere smile and softened eyes, Tod captures the Queen in a candid moment, unadorned and without pretense. The lighthearted portrait is rendered with a limited palette of rose and neutral tones, completing this delightful piece with a soft touch. Joanne Tod's works can be found in many public institutions across Canada including the National Gallery of Canada, the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO), and the Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal.
