John Charlton
Turn of Century English Portrait of Mrs. Rogerson

1901

About the Item

Elegant Victorian original oil portrait of Mrs. Rogerson by John Charlton Robert Azensky Fine Art is pleased to offer this fine example of Victorian portraiture of Mrs. Frances Mary Rogerson by British painter John Charlton (British, 1849-1917), 1901. Rogerson is shown seated in an elegant, relaxed pose, exuding a sense of composure and confidence. She wears a luxurious dress with intricate textures and soft pastel floral patterns. She holds a fan in one hand, possibly symbolizing sophistication or status. Charlton demonstrates great attention to fabric detail—especially the reflective silk and layered textures in the gown. The use of light and shadow highlights her face and upper body, drawing the viewer's focus to her expression and posture. The dark background helps to accentuate the figure and the delicate pastel tones of her dress. Medium: Oil paint on stretched linen Sitter: Mrs. Frances Mary Rogerson (Irish, 1864-1933) (nee Greagh), wife of John Edwin Rogerson (Irish, 1865-1925) Signature: Monogram lower right corner "J.C July 1901" Year Created: 1901 Condition: Good. Professionally cleaned and restored including missing paint, new UV-resistant, non yellowing varnish. Canvas size: 44"H x 34"W Frame size: 49"H x 39.75W (Frame is modern gilt-toned wood frame...included as-is) John Charlton was a British painter and illustrator, best known for his depictions of military scenes, historical events, and portraits. John Charlton was born at Bamburgh, Northumberland and received his first drawing lessons from his father. At the suggestion of Joseph Crawhall he enrolled as a pupil at the government School of Art under William Bell Scott. Though he gained significant recognition for his work illustrating battles and military campaigns, he also painted society portraits such as this picture. Charlton's artistic career included studies at the Newcastle School of Art and the South Kensington Museum (now the Victoria and Albert Museum). Charlton settled permanently in London and exhibiting at the Royal Academy until 1904 by which time he had contributed 53 works. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and was commissioned by Queen Victoria to paint her arrival at St. Paul's Cathedral for the Diamond Jubilee Service in 1899. Later he concentrated on portrait, animals, figurative, battle scenes and landscape painting. A special loan exhibition of his work was staged at the Laing Art Gallery following his death in 1917.

La lecture au jardin (Lesson in the Garden)
By Georges d'Espagnat
Located in New Orleans, LA
French Post-Impressionist painter Georges d’Espagnat captures a charming moment between a mother and her child in this vibrant oil on canvas. Rendered with a studied use of complementary colors and bold brushstrokes, the painting showcases the artist's unique Post-Impressionist style. Remembered as one of the most individualistic artists of the 20th century, his distinctive canvases bring together the loose brushwork of the Impressionists and the bold color palette favored by the Fauves. Together, they achieve a vibrant spontaneity that lends itself well to the carefree subjects of the present work. Masterfully composed, La lecture au jardin moves beyond the Impressionist instinct to capture a fleeting moment on canvas. Rather, d'Espagnat succeeds in creating a deep feeling of harmony in the work. Warm colors are perfectly balanced with cool tones, while vertical and horizontal lines are softened by the curves of the foliage and his subjects' figures. Through his simplification of forms and intentional use of color and line, he creates a scene that is carefully designed and thoroughly modern. A similar view of a mother and her child by d'Espagnat is currently in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York). The Post-Impressionist painter was an individualist since his youth, choosing to forgo traditional schooling in order to independently study the Old Masters in the Louvre. He soon became involved with the most prominent Impressionist and Post-Impressionist painters of the age, including Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Paul Signac, who themselves existed outside the traditional norms of French Academic training. In 1891, he exhibited at the Salon des Refusés, and again the following year at the Salon des Indépendants. By 1895, he held his first one-man show in Paris, and just three years later his success earned him a solo show at the prestigious Durand-Ruel Gallery. Between 1905 and 1910 he made several trips to visit Renoir on the Côte d’Azur. Their close friendship resulted in a group exhibition at Marcel Bernheim...
