José Royo
"Maternity" by Jose Royo 20th century oil on Board Signed

About the Item

"The Maternity" by Jose Royo oil on board. Oil on board Jose Royo's "The Maternity." Even in its small frame, this powerful painting packs a big punch because the artist has captured so much emotion in their faces. His brave use of colours and light is fantastic, and his thick brush strokes of dark and bright oil paint wrap this painting in emotion like the mother and child are wrapped in their blanket. Jose Royo, who was born in Valencia, Spain, in 1941, began exhibiting his artistic talent at a young age. His father, a well-known doctor who was also an avid art collector, hired private tutors to teach Royo how to draw, paint, and sculpt when he was nine years old. Royo applied to Valencia's San Carlos Royal Academy of Fine Arts when he was 14 years old. Royo continued his private artistic education with the San Carlos Academy's Chairman of Art Studies, Aldolfo Ferrer Amblat, when he turned 18 years old. He also went to major European museums at the time to learn about famous masters like Velázquez, Goya, Renoir, Monet, and Sorolla. Between the middle of the 1960s and the early 1970s, Royo expanded his range of skills by creating theater sets, graphic illustrations, and restoration work. Additionally, he competed in prestigious competitions and won major awards. He began exhibiting in Spain in 1968, particularly in Lisbon, Madrid, and Barcelona. Royo was given commissions to paint portraits of King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia after his work was well received in Madrid. He was later given commissions to paint prominent political and social figures, as well as judges from the High Magistrature and the Court of Justice. Royo began developing a growing desire to paint his birthplace at the age of 25; to convey Valencia's light, color, and intensity and the Mediterranean. His work would shift focus and style as a result; He needed to work on classical compositional styles and perfect new ways to capture light and shadow. Royo honed his technique for depicting the Mediterranean over the course of the 1980s and exhibited internationally, most notably in London, Brussels, Copenhagen, and Paris. Additionally, he attended the Geneva International Art Fair. Royo's "matured" style has evolved since 1989 and continues to this day. His dramatic use of color and "texturing" effectively capture his subject matter. The works of the European masters can be compared to one another; For instance, Royo's "homage to the female form" clearly demonstrates his influence on Renoir. In Royo's work, the term "Renoir" refers to the similar, almost portrait-like treatment of the female model caught in a peaceful, contemplative moment surrounded by "bursts" of color from floral landscapes. "If the artwork of Renoir were blended with that of the 'Valencian painters,' you would arrive at canvasses approaching the uniqueness of the impressive work of Royo," critics have come to this conclusion. Additionally, Royo's work and that of the Spanish master Joaquin Sorolla can be distinguished by striking resemblances. Both had classical training, were born in Valencia, and "matured" into painting styles that captured the dramatic visual essence of their home country, Valencia, and the Mediterranean Sea. Both of them have been called "painters of the light"; "of the Light of the South," as some have referred to Spain's southern coast, Royo's masterful treatment of Mediterranean subjects is haunting, mysterious, and full of raw power at the same time due to the overwhelming influence of Sorolla and his own style. The sweeping brushstrokes, bold color swaths, and heavy impasto draw the viewer in until the final absolute moment when one realizes that they are actually there in the scene, experiencing the sun's light and heat, the salt, sea spray, and the sound of crashing waves. Royo not only conveys an image but also mood and atmosphere. The connoisseur is compelled to compare it to the old masters because this is uncommon in today's art world. As a result, it becomes clear how appealing Royo's artwork is to collectors today.
