About the Item

Joseph Lavos (Austrian, 1807-1848) Signed: J. Lavos (Lower, Right) " Memories of The Year 1840 ", 1840 (written on the note within the sitter's hand, translated from German) Oil on Canvas Size: 30" x 24 3/8" Housed in a 2 1/2" Frame Overall Size: 34 3/4" x 28 3/4" This remarkable mid-19th century portrait, done by the Austrian artist Joseph Lavos, portrays a stately gentleman with a rather confident look that seemingly holds back a grin. A grin, sure to materialize when the moment of seriousness is over or when no one is looking. I often find myself in a similar state when achieving a great sale for a piece I had the utmost confidence in. Though we are unsure of who this gentleman is, or for which the note inscribed " Memories of the Year 1840 " refers to, I like to imagine he may have had a great deal of success in business that year, or perhaps another incredible accomplishment occurred for him. Either way, I will enjoy his company in our gallery for the time he is here and look forward to possibly hearing another take on what may be crossing his mind by the next owner of this charming painting.
