Biography: Jozef Meganck, also known as Joseph Méganck, was a Belgian painter and etcher born on July 9, 1807, in Aalst, Belgium. He was the son of Pierre François Meganck, a local butcher, and Jacqueline Smet, both natives of Aalst.
Meganck's talent in the arts was evident from a young age. In 1826, he received the palm of honour at the municipal academy in Aalst, marking the beginning of his promising career. He further honed his skills in painting, primarily in the artistic hubs of Brussels and Paris, where he developed a reputation for his work.
Throughout his life, Meganck traveled extensively, with notable periods spent working in Paris from 1833 to 1835, Florence in 1835, Brussels from 1839 to 1846, and several visits to Italy in 1846 and 1852. His artistic style was deeply influenced by these experiences, and his works often reflected the classical and romantic traditions of his time.
One of Meganck's most famous works is "Queen Louise-Marie on Her Deathbed," a poignant portrayal of the second wife of Belgian King Leopold I. This painting exemplifies Meganck's ability to capture the deep emotion and dignity of his subjects.
In 1890, Meganck returned to his hometown of Aalst, accompanied by Hélène Rossel, a seamstress who was about 50 years his junior. He spent the last year of his life living in Pontstraat before passing away in 1891.
Meganck's legacy is deeply woven into the fabric of Aalst, where he is honored with a street named after him—Jozef Meganckstraat. His works continue to be appreciated, with one of his notable pieces, "Simon of Cyrene Helps Jesus Carry the Cross," residing in the Sint-Martinus Church in Aalst.
Jozef Meganck's life and work reflect a deep dedication to his craft and a significant contribution to Belgian art. His paintings, marked by their emotional depth and technical skill, remain a testament to his enduring artistic legacy, and his name lives on in his hometown.

French Mid 19th Century Portrait of an Italian Brigand. Oil on Canvas.
Located in Cotignac, FR
Mid 19th Century oil on canvas portrait of an Italian brigand, unsigned, in painted wood and gilt frame.
The painting is a fine and fascinating rendition with plenty of wonderful character and detail to the costume, accessories, landscape and seascape. Very atmospheric and imposing much like the character it portrays.
There is a trade stamp to the back of the canvas for the Paris firm of Susse Freres. The canvas is on a fine quality stretcher with 'keys'. There is an artist's name or title written on the top of the rear stretcher (see photo).
Bands of brigands who populated the hills of southern Italy were steady fodder for the Romantic imagination, and their exploits were reported both factually, fancifully and artistically
The painting dates from a period when France, under its then leader Napoleon III, was involved in the conflicts in the Italian states and the unification and eventual creation of the nation of Italy.
An earlier and similar portrait exists of the infamous brigand Mazzocchi by Achille-Etna Michallony .

Light is the protagonist in this landscape with female figure by Manuel García Blázquez; an intense and soft light that interacts with color, and the impressionist technique that defines the work of this painter.
The beautiful silhouette of a woman dressed in white and the reflections of the water in the pond at the back of the garden give the scene a certain luminous dreaminess, which contrasts with the strength of the color of the flowers in the foreground. The background landscape, so timeless and lyrical, serves as the setting for a female portrait with classical reminiscences.
The work is executed along the lines...
