Attributed to Lavinia Fontaa (1552-1614) Oil on Canvas 91.6 x 71.1cm In A Contemporary Cassetta style frame The painting Portrait of a Girl with a dog on her side has been attributed to the Bolognese painter Lavinia Fontana (1552 -1614) by Caroline Murphy who, in recent years, has published a study on the painter, Lavinia Fontana: After careful reflection and research, it has been concluded by Dr Silvia Davoli that this fascinating portrait, possibly a marriage portrait (where the dog symbolizes fidelity and faithfulness) surely belongs to the best Mannerist tradition, as it emerges from the drawing of the girl’s hands, from her distinctive enigmatic look and the general deployment of light and shadow. The fashion of her costume suggests a date in the later 16th century, very beginning of the 17th century and a Florentine location. The latter hypothesis has been recently confirmed by Francesca Baldassarri, expert in Florentine portraiture. The painting 'Portrait of a Girl with a dog on her side' was acquired by the owner in 2007 and subsequently restored. The appearance (configuration) of the portrait, and in particular the girl’s costume, suggests it dates from between the very end of the sixteenth and the beginning of the seventeenth century, as confirmed by Professor Davanzo Poli, specialist in historic dresses and fabrics. This kind of fabric, satins façonné or embroidered, in this case designed with a horizontal S pattern, was very fashionable at the time. The date is further confirmed by the dimension and shape of the collar. This satin, which is particularly visible in the sleeves, is almost identical to that represented in a very small late seventeenth-century portrait on copper at the Galleria Palatina (inv.433), recently attributed to Fontana. Within the art world and the expert opinions sought, we feel that this painting is by Lavinia Fontana, (1552-1614) although other experts will point to various features with which they would disagree; but, we can all agree on this painting being of the period and a very enigmatic and beautiful portrayal of a young woman.
