About the Item

Louis-Maurice BOUTET DE MONVEL (Orléans 1850 - Paris 1913) Oil on canvas 52,3 x 41,4 cm (71,6 x 60,2 cm avec l’encadrement) = 20.6 × 16.3 in (28.2 × 23.7 in with frame) Signed lower right Imperial bacchantes, thickly bearded faces, downy chins, piercing gazes, strong heads, shall we say, springing from the neckline. The brushstrokes are quick, fa presto, in the style of José de Ribera, whom he admired so much, minimalist in tone, a monochrome of brown. All the energy of the character bursts from the canvas with a strict economy of means. The impetuous character of a man who did not hesitate to display his royalist inclinations in the face of the Republic at the Salon de la Société des Artistes Français in 1885, with L'Apothéose de la canaille, appears before us head-on. This did not go down well: this statement kept him away from the Salons for a while. But the man was free; from his stays in Algeria, using a colorful palette limited mainly to two tones, orange and blue, to his work as a draftsman and illustrator, to which he devoted himself fully, not seeing it as a minor art. Highly regarded, he pursued a rich career, illustrating a considerable number of works, the list of which would read like a panegyric. Ingenious, he devised a new photogravure process. Talented and modernist, he was invited to participate in the 1899 Vienna Secession Exhibition devoted to European graphic art. That same year, a retrospective of his paintings and graphic art was held at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia. Recognized by posterity, the famous Goupil company celebrated his entire body of work shortly after his death, and in 1987 and 1988, a series of exhibitions in the United States paid tribute to him, including at the Delaware Art Museum, the Carnegie Institute in Pittsburgh, and the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington.
