Lucien-Victor Guirand de Scévola
Lucien-Victor Guirand de Scévola (1871-1950) Portrait of Lady, oil sketch signed

About the Item

Lucien-Victor Guirand de Scévola ( 1871 – 1950) Portrait of a lady, a sketch signed lower right Oil on canvas transfered on cardboard 25 x 18 cm oval Framed : 31 x 24.5 cm This portrait sketch was undoubtedly intended as a finished work by the artist, the best proof of which is that he signed it. We can also believe it because this work is typical of the place he occupied in the history of art of his time and of the way he conceived his work. Throughout his career, this fascinating painter was at the crossroads of two trends: from his Symbolist beginnings to the art of his maturity, he stuck to a very classical tendency, which we can see particularly in the society portraits for which he was much sought after, and at the same time he developed a completely original modernity in more personal and freer works. This remarkable small portrait is precisely the synthesis of his two ambitions as an artist. At once very classical in its pose, and very free in its brushstrokes. There is also the mystery created by the blurring of the face, making it a portrait that is not a portrait at all. What might appear to be contradictions are at the heart of what makes Guirand de Scévola one of the most intriguing and exciting artists of his time. These are the contradictions and the personal quest of a complex and endearing character. This he makes perceptible in this small sketch, which under the appearance of incompleteness shows, on the contrary, all the richness of Guirand's style, and in particular his great talent as a colourist. Lucien-Victor Guirand de Scévola ( 1871 – 1950) was a French painter. He was student of Fernand Cormon and Pierre Dupuis at the École des Beaux Arts in Paris. De Scévola art is remarkable for his silky, velvety and smooth style. The very first part of his career was marked by symbolism, but he later developped his own language, his Art Deco like bunches of flowers are the best known. He was also a great portraitist for the socialites and aristocrats of the period. He was involved in several important art movements during his lifetime, and his style evolved to reflect the changing trends in French art during the first half of the 20th century. His work is often described as a fusion of Symbolism, Post-Impressionism, and elements of modernism, though he remained deeply rooted in traditional French artistic practices. He is also known for his pioneering leadership of the Camoufleurs (the French Camouflage Department) in World War I.

French Romantic School, 19th Century Portrait of a man, a selfportrait ? oil on paper 17.5 x 12 cm oval Framed under glass : 43 x 34.5 cm This rather mysterious portrait is perhaps a self-portrait of the artist who painted it. This is suggested by the three-quarter pose and the gaze fixed on the viewer. What this man seems to be staring at is himself. Similarly, the model's appearance is reminiscent of the image of the romantic, bohemian, tortured artist. It's also very interesting that he used a range of dark colours to reinforce this idea of melancholy. It has been suggested that this small oil on paper is close to the art of François Bonvin (1817-1887) and Théodule Ribot...

ERWIN BINDEWALD (1897-1950) Two men playing draughts, a girl with the red book standing behind them Signed and dated E. Bindewald d.j., 27 Oil on canvas, 140.5 x 90.5 cm In black and gilt gesso frame. Note: Bindewald was born in Charlottenburg. He moved to Berlin in 1914 where he studied till 1924 at the Berliner Kunst Akademie. Bindewald travelled in Europe, but mainly stayed in Germany and certainly never was in China. This painting was made in Europe, presumably in the China Town of Berlin. Bindewald received several commisions in Germany from factory owners who wanted their factories painted inside, usually with workers, as well as outside. In the present painting the sitter on the right seems to be a man with a Manchurian background, wearing the brown coat reserved for the highest aristocracy in China. In China the black sleeve-ends completely cover the hands, indicating that the high aristocracy does not have to do any manuel labour. This man clearly is not a factory worker but he possibly is the (co)- owner of the factory in the background and as such might need his hands to do at least some writing. The man on the left in the modern Western suit...
