Martial Hupé is best known for his spectacular bouquets of flowers, typical of academic art, which is why it is interesting to assess his talent in a completely different genre: portraiture. He clearly made this exception out of friendship for his model, but he proves just as convincing in this genre.
What strikes us and reminds us of the still life painter are the details at the bottom of the painting: the magnifying glass and books, or the page open on an engraving; these are in themselves true still lifes.
Martial Hupé, whose work is documented from 1880 to 1920, was a French painter mainly known for his bouquets of flowers and still lifes. He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1897 onwards and became a member of the society. Literature : Bénézit T 7 p 282

This rather mysterious portrait is perhaps a self-portrait of the artist who painted it. This is suggested by the three-quarter pose and the gaze fixed on the viewer.
What this man seems to be staring at is himself.
Similarly, the model's appearance is reminiscent of the image of the romantic, bohemian, tortured artist. It's also very interesting that he used a range of dark colours to reinforce this idea of melancholy.
