Self-Portrait of the Artist, English, 17th century.

C.1680

About

Newly discovered self-portrait of the artist Mary Beale (Suffolk 1633-1699 London), half-length set within a feigned oval stone cartouche with decorative fruits. C. 1680. Oil on canvas in a period gilded frame. Bears Christie's stencil mark on reverse. Provenance: Private collection, Sweden until 2015 With Thomas Agnew and Sons in 1925, when sold Christie's London, 9th February 1925, lot 50 as by Peter Lely, sold to purchaser 'Lee'. This portrait bears a close resemblance to her self-portrait painted in 1681 and exhibited at the Geffrye Museum in London in 1999. (Mary Beale - Portrait of a seventeenth century painter, her family and her studio', Tabitha Barber, 1999, page 9 and 50). Mary Beale (born Craddock in March 1633) was an important portrait painter of the middle classes in 17th century England and one of the first female English professional painters. She was born in Barrow, Suffolk where her father was a rector and she married Charles Beale in 1651. She possibly studied under Robert Walker but later was chiefly influenced by Peter Lely who was a friend and who allowed her to make smaller copies of his work. Her most active period was in the 1670's and '80's and her husband kept very detailed notes of her studio activities with his notebooks for 1677 and 1681 surviving, found at the Bodleian Library, Oxford and The National Portrait Gallery, London, respectively. Her work often displays her talent in depicting her subjects with a particular sensitivity and charm such as in her portraits of her two sons, Bartholomew and Charles (Tate Britain, London) and in her own self-portrait found in the National Portrait Gallery, London.
