Matthew James Collins
The Trickster

This incredible piece comes from Matthew James Collins, an American-born artist now based in Florence, Italy. "The Trickster" is a truly spectacular work that not only exemplifies the artist's mastery of his style, but also expresses his inner world and thoughts. Close examination of the painting will reveal meaning not immediately apparent, but important and rich nonetheless. An underlying irony motivates the Trickster as the young man in the painting in not really playing the instrument. The mandolin is actually broken. The act of looking at this piece only reinforces the silent metaphor. Collins' meticulous attention to detail is evident even in the portrait's frame, beautifully and lovingly handcrafted. The latin inscription on the frame only reinforces the meaning: Imago Virtutus Simulacrum Veristatis. It can be roughly translated into ‘the appearance is much more appreciated that the truth. This piece was also awarded a 1st prize by the historic Oak Park Art League, the oldest continuously active non for profit art organization in Illinois. From the artist: "Art's purpose is to explore our inner existence and make it visible. Engaging the physical world and extracting meaning has been the artist's concern for millennia. The power of the metaphor possible in human figure is a driving force in my work. The result comes from observation tempered by the language of sculptural form represented in so many masterpieces of the past. My ultimate hope is to address the fundamentals of Art: Truth and Beauty seen through eyes educated to the nuances of Nature."
