Ritratto femminile (olio su tela, 154,5 x 92 cm; con cornice dorata e intagliata, 188 x 123,5 cm).
È firmato in basso a sinistra MGordigiani.
Il nostro dipinto, a figura di tre-quarti, rientra pienamente nella ritrattistica matura di Gordigiani, influenzata dall’esperienza macchiaiola e dalle avanguardie parigine, con rimandi stilistici al bozzetto per il ritratto della regina Margherita, del quale parrebbe essere coevo. È contraddistinto da un afflato di dolcezza che però non cela la complessità dell’animo umano, aspetto rilevato dalla stessa tecnica pittorica, che mostra una maggior definizione dei tratti somatici del volto, estremamente realistico e vivo, rispetto alla composizione impressionista del vestito e dello sfondo. I ritratti di Gordigiani sono esemplificativi di un’epoca, come si evince dallo stile elegante della donna, ben evidenziato dalla raffinatezza dell’abito dai morbidi panneggi e dal fermaglio gioiello nello chignon.
Sebbene l'effigiata non sia stata ancora identificata, si trovano notevoli somiglianze fisiognomiche con Nanne Schrader nata Wiborg, norvegese sposata a un armatore tedesco attivo nel commercio dei diamanti che si era fatta strada nella società vittoriana. La "lady" si fece ritrarre anche da Giovanni Boldini, particolare interessante in quanto Gordigiani e l'artista ferrarese erano ritenuti i più importanti ritrattisti dell'epoca ed erano anche amici.
Pittore fiorentino, fu iniziato alla scultura nello studio di Lorenzo Bartolini prima di decidere di dedicarsi esclusivamente alla pittura, iscrivendosi alla scuola fondata da Luigi Mussini e poi frequentando i corsi di Giuseppe Bezzuoli all’Accademia delle Belle Arti. Oltre alla formazione accademica, partecipava attivamente al Caffè Michelangelo condividendo le ricerche artistiche del gruppo dei Macchiaioli. Importante fu la sua esperienza parigina, nel 1860, dove frequentò gli ambienti mondani introdotto dalla sua amica Virginia Oldoini contessa di Castiglione.
Fondamentale fu il ritratto del re Vittorio Emanuele II, eseguito per conto del cugino Eugenio Emanuele di Savoia, che riscosse talmente tanto successo da valergli il ruolo di ritrattista ufficiale della casa reale.
In vita ebbe una notevole fama e viaggiò molto, sia in Europa che in America, richiesto dalle più importanti corti per la sua abilità nell’arte del ritratto. Morì nella città natale nel 1909.

Michele Gordigiani
Michele Gordigiani dealt with the genre scenes and historical-mythological framework. He always devoted himself more frequently to portraits, a genre that brought him fame in Italy and worldwide. At the Academy's Annual Exhibition, in 1854, he presented two male portraits, still tied to academic schemes. Since 1855, he frequented the Caffè Michelangiolo with his brother Anatolio, a place where artists who will give life to the Macchiaioli movement, to which he adhered with conviction to new artistic research. Here, he became friends with Giovanni Fattori, Telemaco Signorini, Diego Martelli, Cristiano Banti and in particular with Angiolo Tricca, becoming one of the animators of the group of innovators, which often met in his studio.
