Abstract Anthropomorphic Acrylic Floral Portrait with Crackled Gloss Finish

2024

About the Item

Anthropomorphic portrait, floral motif, pioneer hat, red bow, autobiographical memory, and a distinctive crackled gloss finish converge in "The Pioneer of School nº39", an early and emblematic work from the Fetiches series by Moldovan-born, Spain-based artist Natasha Lelenco (Chișinău, Moldova, 1982). This anthropomorphic painting is distinguished by its intentional crackled glossy surface, which enhances the sense of historical resonance and transforms the image into a tactile, almost archaeological object. The deliberate use of this unique surface treatment reinforces the work’s themes of memory, identity, and impermanence, allowing the past to quite literally emerge through the cracks. Lelenco draws on her own childhood in Soviet-era Moldova, specifically her experience at School nº39 in Chișinău, to reflect on the moment when political upheaval disrupted even the most intimate of rites—like the transition into the Pioneers, a distinction never granted to her after Moldova's independence. Through this lens, the artwork becomes both a personal relic and a symbolic portrait, marked by the bright red scarf and hat once worn by Soviet Pioneer children—now integrated as ornamental elements into a richly layered floral composition. Part of the Fetiches series, this piece exemplifies Lelenco’s meticulous method of constructing anthropomorphic forms through the accumulation of symbolic, decorative, and psychological motifs. Her work occupies a space between the naïve and the ceremonial, resonating with the imaginative portraiture of Giuseppe Arcimboldo while anchoring itself firmly in contemporary explorations of post-Soviet identity and cultural memory. The intentional crackled gloss finish further amplifies the artwork’s enigmatic aura, turning its surface into a fragile, timeworn skin that invites closer inspection. It is not a mark of age, but a conceptual choice that bridges the gap between personal story and material presence. The Pioneer of School nº39 is offered exclusively by our gallery, mounted in a custom-made American box frame designed by the artist. As with all works in the Fetiches series, this piece may be displayed alone or combined with others of similar dimensions to create a modular installation. "DUAL Pop Icon No. 1", Monumental Contemporary Spray Painted Portrait
By Paul Barces
Located in Houston, TX
Bold, graphic spray paint portrait piece by local Houston street artist DUAL titled "Pop Icon No. 1 ". Signed, titled, and dated on the back. This piece was featured at a solo exhibition of DUAL's work titled "Waste Nothing" at the Wedge Space in Houston, TX in 2016. Artist Biography: DUAL stands for the conflict between “street art” and “fine” art, between freeway burners and gallery exhibitions, between mass recognition and total anonymity. His bold lines and fresh colors are a break from the every day monotony of life in the city—a taste of urban subculture, whether you asked for it or not. While one may not have a choice in where and when they encounter a DUAL piece, DUAL leaves it up to the observer to assign a meaning to his work. By operating under a pseudonym, he lets his audience write their own narrative for who he is and the message he is trying to get across. Perhaps best known for his work with wheat paste, particularly since his feature in the 2011 wheat pasting documentary Stick ‘Em Up!, DUAL has never been one to confine himself to a particular medium, background, or context. He has been recognized not only for his work with silkscreen and spray paint, but also for his work with lithography and acrylics. Though his obsession with “making marks” stems from his background in graffiti, he has translated that into a passion for creating art. His “art” includes everything from large-scale murals to micro...
