About the Item

This silver-ground circular portrait by Natasha Lelenco reflects on transformation, migration, and personal renewal through the symbolism of the coin and the intimacy of portraiture. Currency #265 depicts a male profile painted in deep indigo and cobalt tones against a luminous metallic background. Around the head, a Galician inscription reads: “Mudei de pel, mudei de mundo, mudei.” (I changed my skin, I changed my world, I changed.) The phrase turns in an endless loop, echoing the cyclical nature of identity and adaptation. The metallic surface—both reflective and tactile—evokes the tension between material and memory. Textural layers within the head suggest the erosion and reconstruction of self that accompany every displacement. Executed in acrylic and metallic pigments on a circular pine wood panel (26 cm diameter, 2 cm thickness), the work balances visual precision with conceptual depth. Part of the artist’s ongoing Currencies series, encompassing over 200 original pieces, Currency #265 transforms the familiar form of the coin into a site of poetic reflection. Each Currency replaces national emblems with anonymous human faces, emphasizing shared vulnerability over collective power. The artist assigns an arbitrary value to every work, a gesture that critiques how worth and recognition are distributed across societies. These paintings can be displayed individually or arranged as modular installations. Their compact scale, chromatic unity, and sculptural tactility make them ideal for both domestic interiors and curated institutional walls. As a collectible conceptual artwork and giftable wall piece, Currency #265 resonates with the Wunderkammer tradition—objects that merge intimacy, curiosity, and cultural reflection.
