About the Item
The four portraits of choristers in mixed media on wood that compose this multiple panel are the original artworks from which the project "Choristers Without Chorus" originates. Based on reproductions of these four pieces, which were intervened and randomly modified, Natasha Lelenco scattered small reproductions in various urban and rural spaces in Spain for passersby to freely collect.
The artist herself describes this project as both a pictorial work, a collaborative action, and an installation. It is proposed as an intervention in urban space consisting of leaving small, solitary pieces made in mixed technique (transfer and acrylic on wood). Each piece represents a character in a singing attitude, displayed with a certain gesture of sadness.
The word "choir" (from the Latin "chorus") also refers in Romance languages to the heart, an organ associated with life. The project focuses on the importance of community, in a context where the current phase of capitalism has unraveled the community threads that bind us, emptying the idea of community of meaning and consequently dissolving the choir into multiple dissonant voices.
Executed in acrylic on wood and glued paper, these portraits contain the referential elements of the artist's work, combining exquisite realistic figuration in the characters' gazes with an intense use of color that contrasts the emotional character of the gazes and composition with seemingly unfinished flat elements.
Natasha Lelenco, born in Chișinău, Moldova in 1982, is a prominent Moldovan painter and contemporary artist who has been residing in Galicia, Spain, since 2008. She is especially known for her figurative work, particularly in the realm of portraiture. Holding a degree in Fine Arts from the University of Cluj-Napoca in Romania, her art has been featured in numerous international exhibitions and art fairs. Natasha Lelenco's art has been showcased across exhibitions in Spain, Germany, Denmark, Portugal, Mexico, and beyond. Natasha Lelenco's approach is figurative, primarily centered on the human form, which she understands as an integral part of life rather than its core. Her themes encompass identity, self-awareness, and the role of chance in shaping the value of things and life itself. Her artistic journey has given rise to self-contained series where narrative and format harmonize, often springing from a playful interplay of repetition, color juxtapositions, deformations in pursuit of psychological realism, and a selective use of elements and resources available in her studio.
