About the Item
Alfred Neville Lewis 1895-1972, was a South African artist. He studied at the Slade School of Art in London and became a member of the New English Art Club in 1920, he married a fellow student and this is , we believe , the portrait of his wife. It maybe that the look of resignation was a determining factor in the assessment of this painting, however Lewis was an accomplished portrait painter and produced a large number of portraits throughout his career, including armed forces personnel and numerous people resident in South Africa irrespective of their financial status.
