About the Item

‘Tribal Indochine Woman 3’ is a large photorealist oil on canvas painting created by Vietnamese artist Nguyen Quang Huy in 2008. Featuring an elegant white and black palette, the painting depicts a southeast Asian woman looking in the distance at a scene invisible to us. The countryside north of Hanoi has a multitude of ethnicities inhabiting their lands. Well known are the so-called 'highland' people or ethnic minorities residing in the mountainous areas. Huy has traveled there many times over the years and gotten to know the people and their ways of life. The result is a series of photo realistic paintings of the women wearing head ware which symbolizes the tribe they are from. His paintings reflect the misty dreamlike coolness of the mountains and cultural aspects and the beauty of the female inhabitants. With its photorealist quality, exquisite subject and black and white palette, this large oil on canvas painting of square format will be a strong focal point in any home, perhaps placed above an enfilade, credenza or settee. Nguyen Quang Huy was born in Ha Tay, Vietnam in 1971 and studied at the Hanoi Fine Arts University as well as participating in residencies in Germany, Australia and the USA. Huy has staged solo exhibitions in Vietnam, Germany, France, and Singapore, and participated in several exhibitions internationally, including group shows in Singapore, Germany, France, Japan, USA, Finland, Thailand, Australia, the Netherlands, and United Kingdom. His works are included in the permanent collection of the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum, Japan and the World Bank Art Program, USA.

Santibañez Servat works his magic in creating this stunning example of photorealism, with his brand of the surreal. The artist works in thin layers of oil paint diluted with linseed oil to create an old world master portrait of a Japanese woman. The background inspired by his interpretation of Shunga, Japanese erotic woodblock prints.
