The painting is a self-portrait and it depicts the painter Niccolò Cassana, a famous Venetian artist whose fame led him to work at the English court in London, where he died. This work is considered to be a replica of a series of self-portraits by Cassana, all of which follow the same compositional scheme. The painter is dressed in black with a wide white cloth collar, holding a palette and brush in his hand. Similar portraits can be found in important galleries such as the Galleria Palatina and the Uffizi in Florence. Stylistic similarities can be seen with the self-portraits of Jean Grimou (1678–1733).
Cassana came from a Genoese family and arrived in Venice together with Bernardo Strozzi. At the age of just 23, he confidently offered his self-portrait to the Medici family in Florence, a character trait that may also explain his many self-portraits. After 1709, he moved to London, by then a much sought-after portrait painter.
