About the Item

French Old Master Portrait Painting Very rare and fine portrait presumed to depict Armande Béjart, the wife of Molière. This wonderful work is an outstanding example of French portraiture from the 17th century, the artist paid great attention to the details and wonderfully captured the kindness in the sitters face, the sparkle in her eyes and softness of the luxurious fabrics. Armande-Grésinde-Claire-Élisabeth Béjart (1645 – 30 November 1700) was a French stage actress, also known under her stage name Mademoiselle Molière. She was married to Molière, who is widely regarded as one of the greatest writers in the French language and world literature. Their wedding took place on January 23rd 1662 and their wedding documents (" Contrat de mariage") are still preserved in the French national archives, where one can consult them. She herself was one of the most famous French actresses in the 17th-century. She played her first important role in Molière's company in June 1663, as Élise in the Critique de l'école des femmes. She was out of the cast for a short time in 1664, when she had a son with Molière, with King Louis XIV and Henrietta of England standing as godparents to the child. In the spring, beginning with the fêtes at Versailles given by the king to Anne of Austria and Maria Theresa of Spain, she started her long list of important roles. She was at her best as Celimène, a role which was inspired by herself, in Le Misanthrope, and just as admirable as Angélique in Le Malade imaginaire. She was the Elmire at the first performance of Tartuffe, and the Lucile of Le Bourgeois gentilhomme. A near identical version of this portrait by Nicolas Mignard is housed in the beautiful Musée Carnavalet in Paris. The present painting is likely from his workshop or created by a close follower. The canvas measures ca. 48 by 61cms and with frame ca 76 by 66cms.

This highly decorative portrait depicts the 26 year old Caspar Roemerskirchen, wearing an intricate jacket made of a luxurious black fabric, which is stiffened and shaped to perfectly fit his silhouette. It is adorned with an opulent collar, which at the time was a true status symbol, worn to emphasise the refined class and social status of the sitter. In his hands he is holding luxurious soft leather gloves. The vivid green drapery and table cloth add further vivacity to the portrait.
