Patience Hilda Street
Portrait of a Rancher "Pete"

circa 1975

About the Item

Oil portrait of a rancher with cowboy hat, by Patience Street (née Lloyd) (English, 1905-2010). Signed by the artist in the lower left corner. There are multiple notes on the frame on verso. Presented in a multi-layered wood frame. Patience Hilda Street (née Lloyd) (English, 1905-2010) was born on 11 December 1905 in Aspley Guise, Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom, and was educated in Belgium. Patience was an artist and photographer. She married Patrick Birley in England and they moved to Victoria, BC, Canada, where her children were born. After Patrick's death, she moved to Honolulu, Hawaii, where she met and married Charlie Street. She had many "one-man shows" at art galleries in Victoria and Vancouver, British Columbia, and in Honolulu Hawaii. Her preferred medium in her earlier life was pastel, but later turned her interest more to oils and acrylics. She was always a specialist in portraiture - both of people and animals, although animals were by far her preference. It was often noted that she had a knack for capturing the personality of an animal in her pictures. After her husband's death in 1962, she moved to Honolulu which she had always loved. There she met and later married Charles Street. After his death she met and married Barry Bauernschmidt. She died on 25 September 2010 at the age of 104 in Honolulu, Hawaii. Her first husband, S. Patrick Birley, was related to Sir Oswald Hornby Joseph Birley, who was also famous for portraits.
