Pair of portraits follower of Philippe de Champaigne

About the Item

Follower of Philippe de Champaigne (Brussels, May 26, 1602 - Paris, August 12, 1674) Pair of portraits (2) Oil on canvas , 58 x 44 cm with frame, 67 x 54 cm A sense of deep stillness and intense introspection characterizes the pair of portraits depicting a noblewoman and a nobleman whose coat of arms refers to the French municipality Grand-Rullecourt, located in the Pas-de-Calais department in the Haute-France region. Champaigne was a master at capturing the essence of his subjects, revealing their personalities through an understated and rigorous style. His portraits are not simply physical representations, but true psychological studies. The faces, often illuminated by a sharp, cold light, seem to emerge from the darkness, revealing every detail, every wrinkle, every expression. There is no room for idealization or flattery. Champaigne paints the truth, with all its rawness and beauty. The poses are composed, almost static, conveying a sense of dignity and authority. The colors are cool and restrained, dominated by grays, blues and browns, creating an atmosphere of seriousness and rigor. But beyond their austere appearance, Champaigne's portraits reveal a deep humanity. The gazes, often direct and penetrating, seem to invite the viewer to reflect on life, death, and spirituality. Philippe de Champaigne, born in Brussels and settled in Paris in 1621, was a highly successful court painter. He soon abandoned Baroque influences for a more measured and rigorous style, becoming the favorite artist of powerful figures. Champaigne was the leading French portrait painter in the reign of Louis XIII. He was employed by the king and Cardinal Richelieu, for whom he executed the series of portraits for which he is chiefly remembered. Champaigne was also a prolific painter of altarpieces and religious paintings, such as "The Dream of St. Joseph." He arrived in Paris in 1621 and began his career working on the decoration of the Luxembourg Palace for the queen mother, Marie de' Medici. His style reflects his Flemish origins and the robust realism of Rubens. His handling of drapery is reminiscent of that of ancient Roman statues. His work is characterized by austere realism, static composition, and cool colors, with a focus on the psychological rendering of his subjects. After the loss of his family, he came to Jansenism, further influencing his style toward simplicity and spirituality. Champaigne produced numerous sacred works and portraits of great intensity, most notably those of Richelieu and members of the Port-Royal community. He died in 1674, leaving an indelible mark on 17th-century French portraiture. Champaigne became a founding member of the French Academy, but under the influence of Jansenism, he increasingly withdrew from the court and focused on portraits of leading Jansenists. The style of these, and of his devotional works of the time, reflects the austere religious doctrine of that movement. His portraits are windows to the soul, allowing us to glimpse the complexity and depth of the human soul. Whether it is a powerful cardinal like Richelieu or a devout nun from Port-Royal, Champaigne manages to capture the essence of each individual, revealing their uniqueness and humanity.

French Mid 19th Century Portrait of an Italian Brigand. Oil on Canvas.
Located in Cotignac, FR
Mid 19th Century oil on canvas portrait of an Italian brigand, unsigned, in painted wood and gilt frame. The painting is a fine and fascinating rendition with plenty of wonderful character and detail to the costume, accessories, landscape and seascape. Very atmospheric and imposing much like the character it portrays. There is a trade stamp to the back of the canvas for the Paris firm of Susse Freres. The canvas is on a fine quality stretcher with 'keys'. There is an artist's name or title written on the top of the rear stretcher (see photo). Bands of brigands who populated the hills of southern Italy were steady fodder for the Romantic imagination, and their exploits were reported both factually, fancifully and artistically The painting dates from a period when France, under its then leader Napoleon III, was involved in the conflicts in the Italian states and the unification and eventual creation of the nation of Italy. An earlier and similar portrait exists of the infamous brigand Mazzocchi by Achille-Etna Michallony . Léon Cogniet...

Giea, Oil Painting Realism, Alla Prima, History Flows Into the Present, Figures
Located in Houston, TX
Look for free shipping when checking out. If not gallery will pay shipping in Continental USA. Gallery Wrapped. Giea reexamines portraits of individuals throughout history to illustrate the premise that history flows into the present in an ever-changing state. And, with each new context, we view people and events through a contemporary lens specific to that moment. Giea appropriates and contextualizes original portrait elements to create reinvented portraits using technique and patterning that brings a contemporary context and perspective to these historically inspired portraits. My current body of work, Contemporary Histories, explores this phenomena by re-interpreting historical portraiture using a contemporary visual language. It is my intent to create a modern visual lens through which to view these individuals and their legacies, as they continue to flow into the present in ever-changing states. As a keen example of how history changes and morphs over time, I have selected portraits of women who chose an alternate path from the traditional ones prescribed in their times. Some of these individuals overtly stepped outside the traditional roles prescribed for women to realize their goals. Others astutely maneuvered within the social system they lived in to obtain their aspirations. Whether altruistic or nefarious, these women and their actions altered the future cultural landscape. Through a 21st century lens, we view them as women with minds of their own, who made choices to control their own lives and futures. Often, in stark contrast to how they were viewed and how their actions were recorded in their own times. For a modern visual language, a combination of fine and decorative arts has inspired my approach to this subject. Employing several formal contemporary tenets, most notably, rather than place the figure in a 3-dimensional space, as in the originals, the figures reside in flat graphic picture planes of damask designs, repetitive patterns or botanical grounds as modern settings for their modern legacies. These graphic backgrounds symbolize what was historically considered a woman’s proper domain, in particular, gardening and needle crafts, such as; quilting, embroidery and sewing. Formally, unlike the originals, I am working alla prima, rather than with a base grisaille and delicate layers of glazing. While, the patterned and botanical environments, along with gold leaf applications, contemporary compositions and color palettes are formally influenced by a spectrum of 19th - 21st century artists and artisans; from Gustav Klimt and the Wiener Werkstatte to Henri Rousseau, Tamara de Lempicka and Will Cotton.
