About the Item

Pierre Édouard Frère French, (1819-1886) Searching the Attic Oil on canvas, signed Image size: 12 inches x 9.5 inches Size including frame: 17.25 inches x 14.75 inches Pierre Édouard Frère was born in Paris on 10 January 1819 to a creative family. His father Antoine Charles Frere was a music publisher and his brother was the orientalist painter Charles-Théodore Frère. In 1836 at the age of 17, he entered the École des Beaux-Arts in 1836 and studied under Paul Delaroche. He became interested in Realism and became one of the leading exponents of the “sympathetic art” movement in France, which sought to portray the lower classes with dignity and sympathy. Frere married Gabrielle Susanne Bosquet and their son Charles Edouard Frere (1837-1894) also became a genre artist. He began exhibiting at the Paris Salon in 1843 and over the years won several medals. He also won a third-class medal at the 1855 Exposition Universelle and in the same year was named Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur. He spent most of his life living in Ecouen in Seine et Oise, having moved there in 1847 and from this point he began specialising in paintings of children. Although he did paint a series of Orientalist subjects after travelling to Egypt in 1860, his main output became his paintings of everyday people, usually children. In 1868 he made his debut at the Royal Academy exhibiting numerous paintings there until the year before his death. Frere died on 23 May 1886 at Ecouen. Examples of his paintings can be found at the Atkinson Art Gallery, Dundee Art Gallery, Glasgow Museums, Lady Lever Art Gallery, Sudley House and the Wolverhampton Art Gallery. Presentation: The painting is housed in a period gilt frame, which is in excellent condition. Condition: As with all of our original antique oil paintings, this work is offered in ready to hang gallery condition, having just been professionally cleaned, restored and revarnished. © Benton Fine Art

  • 19th century British portrait of Sir Charles Dickens seated in an interior

Well painted 19th-century portrait of Sir Charles Dickens. The original painting is in the National Gallery in London and I'm sure this piece would have been painted by a fan of the author who was also a very good artist as this piece is a very good copy of the original painting. There was a great fashion to paint copies of famous paintings during the 19th century and most of the world's most famous paintings have been copied many times. Often the artist who does the copy is very talented but usually anonymous With this piece, it's the only way to own an antique copy...

  • 19th century French, Surrender of the French at Huningen Fort to the Austrians
    Located in Woodbury, CT
Wonderful French period copy of the famous painting by Jean-Baptiste Édouard Detaille, which the original is now in a museum in Paris. This piece came from a private collection in New Jersey where it had been since it was purchased in France back in the 1950s. The previous owner was an Art dealer in NYC during the 1950s-70s and she kept some of her favorite paintings, this being one of them. The piece was re-framed in the 1990s In 35 years of dealing in paintings, I have never seen another example of this scene, it is very rare.! History of the scene: In the Siege of Hüningen (27 November 1796 – 1 February 1797), the Austrians captured the city from the French. Hüningen is in the present-day Department of Haut-Rhin, France. Its fortress lay approximately 2.5 miles (4.0 km) north of the Swiss city of Basel and .5 miles (0.80 km) north of the spot where the present-day borders of Germany, France, and Switzerland meet. During the time of this siege, the village was part of the Canton of Basel City and the fortress lay in an area contested between the German states and the First French Republic. The siege occurred within the French Revolutionary Wars during which Revolutionary France ranged...
