Non si tratta di uno studio preliminare al dipinto ma di una ulteriore messa a fuoco della fisionomia stravolta del protagonista, un ‘primo piano’ che ben corrisponde a quanto annotava Saint-Maurice Cabany descrivendo, nell’opera compiuta, il sembiante di Ugolino “immobile, défiguré, décharné, aveuglé par la faim”1, che Benvenuti realizza in questo dipinto adottando uno stile del tutto inedito sia per il taglio compositivo che per la sobria gamma dei colori. Da quanto si può evincere dalla litografia di Belliard e, soprattutto, dal disegno preparatorio degli Uffizi, l’idea di Benvenuti si esprimeva in una drammatizzazione di prevalente matrice classicista culminante nella testa all’eroica coerente con la scelta di alludere ad un moderno Laocoonte; in questo dipinto invece l’essenziale frontalità del volto fa emergere con forza una componente patetica che rimanda semmai allo studio dei caratteri invalso nelle indagini teoriche e figurative dell’Illuminismo per approdare infine agli ‘alienati’ di Théodore Géricault.
