Robert Mars Stars in Her Eyes Kate 2017 45 x 45 inches Mixed media Ready to hang An artistic descendent of Andy Warhol and Robert Rauschenberg, Mars explores American Pop icons from Marilyn Monroe to Coca-Cola, packaging celebrities opposite brand names and advertising copy as though they were luxury objects. To create his work, he uses Xerox transfer to layer images and text pulled from his vast archive of vintage magazines—making photocopies and blowing them up to enhance their imperfections—and adds boldly colored paint and minimalist patterns, then distresses the image to further highlight the sense of a fading era. Mars finishes the works with a coat of resin, or by adding neon lights, imparting a glossy sheen to these memorials to desire. Robert Mars (American, b. 1969) Born in New Jersey in 1969, and fascinated with 1950’s and 60’s iconography, Robert Mars has produced a body of artwork celebrating the commonplace objects and icons of America’s long past. By taking inspiration from American popular culture and celebrating figures of the 1950’s and 60’s, Mars’ artwork chronicles an evolving relationship with celebrity. Through the application of a rich color palette and tongue in cheek attitude, Mars’ paintings evoke a vintage quality of design and pay homage to the idealized age of growth and hopefulness that was prevalent in the USA at the end of World War II. By merging his own concept of personal idols with those of mainstream culture, Mars is able to focus his work on a deeper analysis of the Golden Age of Americana.
