Santi di Tito Ritratto di Nobildonna Olio su tavola, Sec. XVI, cm 74x61; con cornice 116x100x9 Con procedere degli studi su Santi di Tito, del quale è stata recentemente precisata la nascita fiorentina , si viene sempre più definendo come non solo una delle personalità più interessanti della scena artistica fiorentina, ma anche come il più interessante ritrattista cittadino della seconda metà del Cinquecento. L'attribuzione di questo ritratto al pittore, che nell'impresa dello Studiolo di Francesco I fu uno dei maggiori innovatori fra i giovani riuniti da Vasari e Borghini, appare subito evidente per l’inconfondibile disegno ovale e fermo del volto, reso con un incarnato compatto dai toni rosati che si accende di naturalistiche notazioni epidermiche ma anche di una puntuale figurazioni degli elmenti decorativi dell’abito e dell’acconciatura. Sempre coerente con i modi pittorici di Santi è poi la pittura compatta con la quale vengono definiti i piani semplificati del volto delle donna, che conservano una notazione di luce e di naturale sensibilità in linea con i dettami controriformati dei quali il pittore fu uno dei più fedeli osservanti nella scena fiorentina. Sempre tipica di Santi di Tito è poi la ferma e volumetrica rappresentazione del torso e dell’abito definito nei piccoli intagli della stoffa ma allo stesso tempo semplificato nei volumi delle maniche e del busto. Ancora di santi ci sembra la notazione luministica con la quale è rilevato il disegno dell’abito attraverso stesure compatte ma sottili e trasparenti, oppure è resa la gorgiera bianca che aggiunge una luce netta all’intero dipinto. Una simile scelta pittorica appare nel Ritratto di Guido Guardi coi figli, esposto alla mostra Il Cinquecento a Firenze, (Palazzo Strozzi, 21 settembre 2017 – 21 gennaio 2018, n. IV. 5, pp. 156-157), dove, pur in un ritratto maschile, Santi di Tito usa la medesima cifra formale nella resa dei volti e delle gorgiere. Pur nell'attenzione alle caratteristiche fisionomiche, Santi di Tito conserva, infatti, una cifra disegnativa sempre evidente e riconoscibile pur col passare degli anni, un carattere stilistico che sostiene, con volumi saldi, ogni sua differente prova pittorica. Ne sono un esempio dipinti quali il Ritratto di donna con Figlia, già in collezione Koelliker2, oppure il Ritratto di Lucrezia (Emilia) e Sinibaldo di Niccol Gaddi3, tutti databili agli anni settanta del Cinquecento proprio per la stereometrica definizione delle forma. Col passare degli anni, invece, tale carattere di ascendenza bronzinesca sembra cedere sempre più in favore di una pittura più morbida e sensibile, chiamata a raggiungere esiti di naturalezza sempre maggiore. Dipinto emblematico per seguire tale percorso rimane il già citato Ritratto di Guido Guardi con i figli , dove Santi di Tito ha effigiato il capofamiglia subito dopo il suo ritorno da Roma, fra il 1564 e il 1568, al tempo in cui il Guardi commission al pittore anche una pala con una Natività per la cappella di famiglia a San Giuseppe. L’uomo, seduto su uno scranno, sembra rimandare per la posa arcaizzante alla ritrattistica di primo Cinquecento, alla quale Santi di Tito s’ispira anche per le pieghe frante ma scultoree dell’abito. Sulla stessa tavola, probabilmente verso la fine degli anni settanta del Cinquecento, il pittore venne chiamato ad aggiungere le effigi di figli, quando probabilmente l’opera era già in cornice, e lo fece con una pittura più svolta e libera, in modo da raggiungere effetti naturalistici di maggiore sensibilità. Anche nel Ritratto di donna in esame, i volumi saldi e potenti della figura spiccano sul fondo monocromo della parete con un’evidenza che farebbe pensare alle figure eseguite dalla fine degli anni Settanta del Cinquecento, al pari, appunto dei due figli di Guido Guardi. Nato a Firenze nel 1536, Santi di Tito si form prima da Bastiano da Montecarlo per passare poi dal Bronzino, del quale conserv la preferenza per volumi luminosi e torniti, a cui aggiunse un'attenzione per la chiarezza compositiva e il naturalismo richiesti dai dettami della Controriforma, che lo portarono a guardare allo stile di Scipione Pulzone, e degli Zuccari, conosciuti sia a Firenze, sia durante un soggiorno romano. Riguardo alla formazione del pittore, Raffaello Borghini ricorda come egli proseguì poi i suoi studi presso Baccio Bandinelli, dal quale "ebbe molti avertimenti nelle cose del disegno". L'abilità di Santi di Tito come disegnatore è ricordata anche dal Baldinucci che riporta tuttavia alcuni commenti invidiosi di altri artisti di fronte alla sua disinvolta sicurezza, che appare evidente anche nella “facilità” con la quale è eseguito il complesso partito decorativo di questo dipinto, risolto con velocità di pennellata e sottile armonia cromatica. Dopo la formazione fiorentina, Santi di Tito si trasferì a Roma, dove rimase dal 1560 al 1564: lavor a contatto con gli Zuccari, affresc la cappella di Palazzo Salviati, e, in Vaticano, nel Casino di Pio IV e nel salone del Belvedere. Fu probabilmente a Roma che Santi aggiunse complessità ai caratteri di naturalismo e di quieta semplicità che saranno fondamentali per la sua pittura e costituiranno il suo più grande apporto alla scena fiorentina, dove rientr nel 1564 per partecipare alla realizzazione degli apparati per le esequie di Michelangelo. Tuttavia, il luogo dove la sua pittura appare in tutta la prepotente novità rispetto ai caratteri espressivi della scuola vasariana sono i tre dipinti eseguiti intorno al 1572 per lo Studiolo di Francesco I de' Medici a Palazzo Vecchio. Ai fini di tale svolgimento era forse stato fondamentale un viaggio a Venezia avvenuto all’inizio degli anni Settanta, dove poté conoscere la pittura naturalistica di Tiziano e di Tintoretto, che lo spinse a rinnovare gli schemi della “maniera moderna” fiorentina, pur conservandone per intero la struttura disegnativa. Per la decorazione dello Studiolo egli dipinse La raccolta dell'ambra, Ercole e Jole, e Il passaggio del Mar Rosso. In tutte e tre le opere un'attenzione alle espressioni dei sentimenti lontana dalle codificazioni manieriste, ed un naturalismo dei volti dei gesti e dei toni, già volge verso esiti che preludono alla sintesi di astrazione e naturalezza di questo ritratto, che sarà comunque da riferirsi ad una data più vicina alla fine del decennio. Sempre riguardo al dipinto che qui presentiamo sarà utile rileggere le testimonianze di Raffaello Borghini, ne Il Riposo, e di Filippo Baldinucci, nelle Notizie dei professori del disegno da Cimabue in qua, che sono concordi riguardo l'abilità di Santi di Tito come ritrattista. Nel 1584 Borghini ricorda che a Firenze, di mano di Santi di Tito "vi sono ritratti di naturale molti pittori e scultori"; poi annota anche che "ha fatto Santi molti ritratti, come di papa Pio quarto, del Signor D. Ernando Cardinale de' Medici, del Signor D. Pietro, della Signora Isabella de' Medici, del Signor Paolo Orsino, di Pier Vettori per le lettere così famoso e di molti altri che troppo a lungo sarei a raccontarli" . A giudicare dal livello delle commissioni, Santi di Tito appare dunque già al Borghini, che scrive prima della morte dell'artista, uno dei più importanti ritrattisti fiorentini del momento, e questo ruolo gli derivava proprio dalla sua abilità pittorica e dal suo interesse per il dato naturalistico unito alla sapienza del disegno di tradizione fiorentina, che lo poneva come naturale erede, al pari di Allori, della via aperta dal Bronzino. Tuttavia è soprattutto Baldinucci a dedicare lunghe pagine ai ritratti dipinti dal Titi, ancora presenti alla fine del Seicento a Firenze, la maggior parte dei quali sono purtroppo andati perduti. Vale la pena di trascrivere alcuni passaggi del Baldinucci: Santi di Tito "fu portato dal genio, non meno che dal desiderio di guadagno, a fare ritratti, come quegli che possedendo una istraordinaria sicurezza del disegno, gli conducea con gran facilità e somigliantissimi dal vivo, e quello ch'è più, anche dal morto". Fra i ritratti migliori conservati nelle case fiorentine, vi è quello "fatto da lui di Caterina di Camillo dei Pazzi, nobile fiorentina, che poi vestito l'abito religioso dell'ordine carmelitano, mutando l'antico nome in quello di Maria Maddalena, crebbe tanto in santità, che meritatamente oggi viene ascritta al catalogo de' santi". Baldinucci descrive poi, fra i ritratti, "che uno e bellissimo d'una vecchia in abito vedovile, possiede il marchese Francesco Riccardi”, soggetto che potrebbe accordarsi proprio con quello del dipinto in esame. Ancora lo storico ricorda infine “Ippolito de' Ricci avvocato del collegio de' Nobili, gentilomo, che per suo divertimento molto ha operato in pittura, conserva nella sua casa da Santa Croce alcuni ritratti d'antichi suoi ascendenti e d'altri stati loro congiunti, fra' quali è quello di Niccol Machiavelli, già segretario della Repubblica fiorentina, a cui per parer vivo altro non manca che la voce; un altro ritratto di costui, con altri pure di quella casa, tutti di mano di Santi, conservano gli eredi di Pierfrancesco della stessa nobil famiglia de' Ricci. Il senatore Ruberto Pandolfini avvocato pure del collegio de' Nobili, gentiluomo di somma integrità, prudenza e dottrina, ha nel suo palazzo di via S. Gallo architettato dal gran Raffaello da Urbino, tre ritratti di mano dello stesso Santi, di persone di casa Tornabuoni stati suoi ascendenti da canto di donne". Per finire, questa breve disamina delle fonti sulla ritrattistica di Santi di Tito, oltre le effigi di cavalieri e nobili, Baldinucci ricorda anche come "egli fu ordinario adoperato a far ritratti de' serenissimi principi, e dovendo una volta far quello di madama Cristina di Lorena, allora sposa del granduca Ferdinando I, la quale aborriva il tedio di starsene ferma naturale, trov modo di sbrigarsi in mezzora, nel qual tempo (tanta era la franchezza del suo pennello) condusse un ritratto bellissimo che si merit la lode del granduca e di tutta la corte" . Stando a Baldinucci, anche alla fine del Seicento, nonostante la distanza dagli esiti barocchi della pittura fiorentina, i ritratti di Santi di Tito erano sempre tenuti di gran conto per la loro somiglianza e vivezza, tanto che era ancora fresca la memoria del plauso conquistato dall'artista di fronte alla corte medicea per la sua bravura e velocità. // With the progress of the studies on Santi di Tito, whose Florentine birth has recently been clarified, he is increasingly being defined as not only one of the most interesting personalities of the Florentine art scene, but also as the most interesting citizen portraitist of the second half of the sixteenth century. . The attribution of this portrait to the painter, who in the undertaking of Francesco I's Studiolo was one of the greatest innovators among the young people brought together by Vasari and Borghini, is immediately evident for the unmistakable oval and firm drawing of the face, rendered with a complexion compact with pink tones that lights up with naturalistic epidermal notations but also with a precise figuration of the decorative elements of the dress and hairstyle. Also consistent with Santi's pictorial ways is the compact painting with which the simplified planes of the woman's face are defined, which preserve a notation of light and natural sensitivity in line with the counter-reformed dictates of which the painter was one of the most faithful observers in the Florentine scene. Also typical of Santi di Tito is the firm and volumetric representation of the torso and the dress defined in the small carvings of the fabric but at the same time simplified in the volumes of the sleeves and bust. The luministic notation with which the design of the dress is detected through compact but thin and transparent drafts, or the white ruff is made of saints, which adds a clear light to the entire painting. A similar pictorial choice appears in the Portrait of Guido Guardi with his sons, exhibited at the exhibition Il Cinquecento in Florence, (Palazzo Strozzi, 21 September 2017 - 21 January 2018, n. IV. 5, pp. 156-157), where, even if in a male portrait, Santi di Tito uses the same formal figure in the rendering of the faces and ruffs. While paying attention to the physiognomic characteristics, Santi di Tito preserves, in fact, a design that is always evident and recognizable even with the passing of the years, a stylistic character that supports, with firm volumes, each of his different pictorial proofs. Examples are paintings such as the Portrait of a Woman with Daughter, formerly in the Koelliker2 collection, or the Portrait of Lucrezia (Emilia) and Sinibaldo by Niccol Gaddi3, all datable to the 1770s precisely because of the stereometric definition of the shape. With the passing of the years, however, this character of Bronzine ancestry seems to yield more and more in favor of a softer and more sensitive painting, called to achieve results of ever greater naturalness. An emblematic painting to follow this path remains the aforementioned Portrait of Guido Guardi with his children, where Santi di Tito portrayed the head of the family immediately after his return from Rome, between 1564 and 1568, at the time when Guardi commissioned the painter also an altarpiece with a Nativity for the family chapel in San Giuseppe. The man, seated on a bench, seems to refer for the archaizing pose to the portraiture of the early sixteenth century, which Santi di Tito is also inspired by for the shattered but sculptural folds of the dress. On the same panel, probably towards the end of the seventies of the sixteenth century, the painter was called to add the effigies of children, when the work was probably already in the frame, and he did it with a more turned and free painting, in order to achieve naturalistic effects of greater sensitivity. Also in the Portrait of a Woman in question, the solid and powerful volumes of the figure stand out against the monochrome background of the wall with evidence that would make one think of the figures executed from the late seventies of the sixteenth century, like the two sons of Guido Guardi. Born in Florence in 1536, Santi di Tito was trained first by Bastiano da Montecarlo and then by Bronzino, of whom he retains a preference for luminous and turned volumes, to which he added an attention to the compositional clarity and naturalism required by the dictates of Counter-Reformation, which led him to look at the style of Scipione Pulzone, and of the Zuccari, known both in Florence and during a stay in Rome. Regarding the painter's training, Raffaello Borghini recalls how he then continued his studies with Baccio Bandinelli, from whom "he had many warnings in the matters of drawing". The ability of Santi di Tito as a draftsman is also remembered by Baldinucci who nevertheless reports some envious comments from other artists in the face of his casual confidence, which is also evident in the "ease" with which the complex decorative part of this painting is executed. , solved with speed of brushstroke and subtle chromatic harmony. After his Florentine training, Santi di Tito moved to Rome, where he remained from 1560 to 1564: he worked in contact with the Zuccari, frescoed the chapel of Palazzo Salviati, and, in the Vatican, in the Casino of Pius IV and in the Belvedere hall. It was probably in Rome that Santi added complexity to the characters of naturalism and quiet simplicity that will be fundamental for his painting and will constitute his greatest contribution to the Florentine scene, where he returned in 1564 to participate in the construction of the apparatus for Michelangelo's funeral. . However, the place where his painting appears in all the overwhelming novelty with respect to the expressive characters of the Vasari school are the three paintings executed around 1572 for the Studiolo of Francesco I de 'Medici in Palazzo Vecchio. For the purposes of this development, a trip to Venice at the beginning of the seventies was perhaps fundamental, where he was able to get to know the naturalistic painting of Titian and Tintoretto, which prompted him to renew the schemes of the Florentine "modern way", while preserving them for the entire design structure. For the decoration of the Studiolo he painted The amber collection, Hercules and Jole, and The passage of the Red Sea. In all three works an attention to the expressions of feelings far from the mannerist codifications, and a naturalism of the faces, gestures and tones, already turns towards results that prelude to the synthesis of abstraction and naturalness of this portrait, which will in any case be referred to at a date closer to the end of the decade. Still with regard to the painting that we present here, it will be useful to re-read the testimonies of Raffaello Borghini, in Il Riposo, and of Filippo Baldinucci, in the News of the professors of drawing from Cimabue here, who agree on Santi di Tito's ability as a portraitist. In 1584 Borghini recalls that in Florence, by the hand of Santi di Tito "there are portraits of many painters and sculptors from life"; then he also notes that "he made many portraits of Saints, such as of Pope Pius the fourth, of Mr. D. Ernando Cardinale de 'Medici, of Mr. D. Pietro, of Mrs. Isabella de' Medici, of Mr. Paolo Orsino, of Pier Vettori for the letters so famous and of many others that too long I would be telling them ". Judging by the level of the commissions, Santi di Tito therefore already appears to Borghini, who wrote before the artist's death, one of the most important Florentine portraitists of the moment, and this role derived from his pictorial ability and his interest in naturalistic datum combined with the wisdom of the Florentine tradition design, which placed him as the natural heir, like Allori, of the road opened by Bronzino. However, it is above all Baldinucci who devoted long pages to the portraits painted by Titi, still present at the end of the seventeenth century in Florence, most of which have unfortunately been lost. It is worth transcribing some passages by Baldinucci: Santi di Tito "was led by the genius, no less than by the desire for profit, to make portraits, such as those who, possessing an extraordinary certainty of drawing, led them with great ease and very similar to live , and what is more, even from the dead ". Among the best portraits preserved in Florentine homes, there is the one "made by him of Caterina di Camillo dei Pazzi, a Florentine nobleman, who then dressed in the religious habit of the Carmelite order, changing the ancient name to that of Mary Magdalene, grew so much in holiness that today it is deservedly ascribed to the catalog of saints ". Baldinucci then describes, among the portraits, "that a very beautiful one of an old woman in a widow's dress possesses the Marquis Francesco Riccardi", a subject that could agree precisely with that of the painting in question. Finally, the historian also remembers "Ippolito de 'Ricci lawyer of the college of nobles, gentleman, who for his amusement has worked a lot in painting, keeps in his house from Santa Croce some portraits of his ancient ancestors and other states related to them, among which is that of Niccol Machiavelli, former secretary of the Florentine Republic, to whom nothing is lacking in his living opinion but the voice; another portrait of him, with others also from that house, all by the hand of Santi, retain the heirs of Pierfrancesco of the same noble de 'Ricci family. Senator Ruberto Pandolfini, also a lawyer of the Collegio de 'Nobili, a gentleman of supreme integrity, prudence and doctrine, has three portraits by the hand of the same Santi, of people of the Tornabuoni house, were ascendants of him by the singing of women ". Finally, this brief examination of the sources on the portraiture of Santi di Tito, as well as the effigies of knights and nobles, Baldinucci also recalls how "he was ordinarily employed in making portraits of the serenissimi princes, and having once had to do that of Madama Cristina di Lorraine, then wife of the Grand Duke Ferdinand I, who abhorred the tedium of sitting still naturally, found a way to hurry up in half an hour, in which time (such was the frankness of her brush) painted a beautiful portrait that deserved the praise of the Grand Duke and of the whole court ". According to Baldinucci, even at the end of the seventeenth century, despite the distance from the Baroque results of Florentine painting, the portraits of Santi di Tito were always held in high regard for their likeness and liveliness, so much so that the memory of the applause won by the artist in front of the Medici court for his skill and speed.
