The depiction of the high clergyman is fully in line with the portrait production of Stefano Casabona, an artist who carried out his first academic training in Genoa, the city of which he was a native, and left some of his first works of a devotional nature in its territory, before his move for study to Rome, in which he resided as early as 1793. [...]
Casabona's work is characterized by good executive syntax illustrating the interior of a study in which Federici is frontally effigyed with all the attributes associated with his authority. In 1808, the year the canvas was executed, the role held by the clergyman was "Ponente della Sacra Consulta," as specified by the inscription placed along the edge of the plan of the city Rome, placed on the desk, signed by the painter. In the center of the painting, the artist has symmetrically flanked the figure of the high clergyman with a young personage, dressed in the fashion of the time, who seems to evoke those depicted in his other portraits, probably related to his own family entourage, as evidenced by the seals that garnish his elegant dress. Honorific distinctions that might suggest he could identify himself with that Giovan Battista Federici, then in Rome, as the header of the letter addressed to him and placed above the volumes on the desk attests.
