Theophilus Chima
My Source and My Pride

2022

About the Item

The story of Adaugo in London inspired this piece.  Adaugo came from a very remote village in Africa. Providentially, she landed a good job as a caregiver in London. Despite all the luxuries in London, Adaugo never stops talking and longs to visit her native land of Africa every year. Her passion for her native land, Africa, was so obvious, that her friends nicknamed her MAMA AFRICA. One day, she was asked Why her Passion for the Land of Africa. She replied: "I am African, Africa is my Source, Africa my Pride"  Never forget your Source! About Artist Theophilus Chima is a contemporary figurative African artist in Ibadan, Nigeria. Chima was born in 1974, in Umuka Okposi, Ebonyi State Nigeria, and was exposed to multidisciplinary arts as a youth. After his secondary education, he moved to Ibadan, where he explored the arts and developed his technical approach which combines realism with elements of surrealism. He aims to celebrate African culture along with day-to-day life. His work often portrays the beauty and strength of African women. Chima writes,” I enjoy juxtaposing the rich history of African culture with modern civilization and high fashion to keep history alive while also looking to the future. I want viewers to reflect on my paintings; to feel joy, peace, passion, humor and to bring relief to troubled minds in a troubled world.” His works are widely exhibited internationally and are included in many private collections.
