About the Item
'Sid and Nancy' by American artist Thomas Hoffman, oil on linen, 20 x 18 inches. This photorealistic painting features an antique doll sitting next to a yawning baby against a backdrop of old decorative wallpaper. It is framed in an embellished antique gold frame.
Thomas Hoffman is best known for his portraits and still-life paintings. Using familiar, inanimate objects for their formal qualities of color, texture, and composition, the artist creates straightforward arrangements characterized by a sense of harmony, balance, and beauty. Beyond their aesthetic qualities, the artist is interested in “the symbolic content some objects can hold, as well as the psychological and narrative aspects brought about through the placement or grouping of the objects in view.” Together, this opens the door to multiple interpretations of meaning.
Thomas Hoffman received his BFA from the Art Institute of Chicago and MFA from Northwestern University where he received a fellowship and studied with the realist painter James Valerio. He was represented immediately out of school by the J.Rosenthal gallery in Chicago and a year later moved to New York where his work was represented by the Steibel Modern Gallery.
His work hangs in many private and public collections. He painted the portrait of Professor Irwin Swigart for the Physics Department and of President Michael Young which hangs in the Park Building on the University of Utah campus. His work is also represented in the Springville Museum of Art, the Mary and Leigh Block Museum at Northwestern University, the Richard Davidson collection, and the Art Institute of Chicago.
