About the Item
Thomas Phillips R.A. 1770-1845, was an English portrait painter and he painted many of the greatest people of the day including , artists, poets, writers, scientists and many other professionals and he also painted historical subjects. He studied at the Royal Academy and where later he was elected to the position of Professor of Painting, to equip himself to qualify for his duties he toured Italy and France. This portrait is of his son Henry, who also was a portrait painter however he exhibited less pictures than his father, Henry was somewhat influenced by historical portraits and learnt his abilities mostly from his father. When Thomas Phillips died he had bequeathed his entire collection of artist materials and his studio in central London where it is believed Henry spent the rest of his life. This painting is in very good conserved condition and is a recent discovery which has not been subjected to public advertisement, it is surrounded in the original frame which is magnificent in itself, however the frame could benefit from a small amount restoration to the lower region by a competent frame conservator. I have decided to leave the frame as is so as not to disturb the originality of the whole. This is a museum quality work and a generous illustration of the father's portrait of his son. This painting is held within the original frame the whole will require a crate to pack and ship, therefore a professional packer is required, it is suggested that the buyer be recommended to such a company. I have included before and after conservation photographs.
