19th Century French School - Portrait of a Young Maiden, ca 1840

About the Item

This French School portrait of a lovely young maiden is quite charming. It is not signed but is clearly by an accomplished hand. The young woman's facial expression of innocence and attention to detailing of her clothes attests to the artist's ability to portray the sitter's youthfulness and beauty. This painting dates to the mid 19th century. It is on its original stretchers and was likely restored many years ago. It is in very good condition and only shows the most modest signs of age, here and there. It measures approximately 14 1/2" x 17 1/2". The canvas is in good condition and the painting shows well. It is housed in an early 19th century painted wood carved frame. There is a small 1/4" wood horizontal filler piece at the top of the framed opening to fill in the gap between painting and frame. This is hardly noticeable when viewing and helps to secure the painting snuggly into the frame. The overall framed measurements are 18 1/2" x 22 1/2". The frame is in fair to good condition. There are minor dings here and there but for its age it is a good complement for the portrait. All in all, a very sweet early 19th century portrait that would be a fine addition to anyone's walls and collection.

French Romantic School, 19th Century Portrait of a man, a selfportrait ? oil on paper 17.5 x 12 cm oval Framed under glass : 43 x 34.5 cm This rather mysterious portrait is perhaps a self-portrait of the artist who painted it. This is suggested by the three-quarter pose and the gaze fixed on the viewer. What this man seems to be staring at is himself. Similarly, the model's appearance is reminiscent of the image of the romantic, bohemian, tortured artist. It's also very interesting that he used a range of dark colours to reinforce this idea of melancholy. It has been suggested that this small oil on paper is close to the art of François Bonvin (1817-1887) and Théodule Ribot...
