A fine American School oil portrait of an affluent gentleman or aristocrat in black with a ruffled shirt, seated at his desk with a nicely detailed gilt desk set with Cupid figure, inkwell, quill, and various books, with a bookcase and drapery background, circa 1850. Oil on canvas, unsigned, and housed in a superb molded giltwood frame with applied foliate corner decoration. Minor losses and touchups to the frame. Dimensions: 36 in H x 27.88 in W, actual; 47.88 in H x 40.88 in W x 3.5 in D. Ref: 8
