French Romantic School 19th Century Manly head of bearded man oil on canvas 46 x 37.8 cm In fairly good condition, some inpaintings visible under UV light, mainly in the backgrounds and one in the sitter's beard. Under a glossy varnish. In a nice modern frame : 56 x 48 cm This type of manly head is typical of romantic painting, where this type of portrait was a genre in itself. Inspired by ancient sculpture, the aim is to depict a character or emotion by using a living model as a sitter. This bearded man illustrates this very well, he might seem to be holding back his strength and anger by fixing his attention on the left, thus suggesting a much bigger scene, which is up to the viewer to imagine.
