This intense portrait is particularly moving and interesting. It is presented as an oil study, but seems to have been intended as a finished work. It is always difficult to date a work of this kind, or to place it in a precise artistic period, in the absence of clues and, above all, of a signature. In any case, this fine portrait belongs to the modern period, with a clear homage to classical painting; for example, there is undoubtedly a reminder of Caravaggio in this portrait. It is in the realist tradition, but the execution is particularly nervous and lively.
This panel has been carefully cradled so that it can be displayed and hung unframed, preserving its slightly rough character. This care testifies to the justified interest that has been shown in it.

This rather mysterious portrait is perhaps a self-portrait of the artist who painted it. This is suggested by the three-quarter pose and the gaze fixed on the viewer.
What this man seems to be staring at is himself.
Similarly, the model's appearance is reminiscent of the image of the romantic, bohemian, tortured artist. It's also very interesting that he used a range of dark colours to reinforce this idea of melancholy.
