About the Item

French School of the first half of the 19th Century Portrait of a young gentleman Signed (illegible) and dated 1831 or 1837 ? (see detail photograph) Oil on canvas 61.5 x 50 cm In good condition, relined probably in the past century, some inpaintings visible under UV light, recently cleaned. In a modern frame : 67 x 56 cm This beautiful portrait of a young man — one might even call him a dandy — is characteristic of the era of King Louis Philippe, when it was painted. The subject is depicted as elegant, with particular attention paid to the buttons on his shirt, and the artist has remarkably captured his ambitious and determined character. Although it bears a signature, it is currently impossible to identify. We hesitate between 1830 and 1837 as to the date, but in any case, it is a typically beautiful Romantic portrait.

Jules Boilly (1796-1874) Portrait of a young man, drawing signed and dated
Located in Paris, FR
Jules Boilly (1796-1874) Portrait of a young man, in uniform, signed and dated 1837 on the lower left charcoal and heightenings of blue, red and white chalk on paper 27.5 x 21.5 cm Framed : 41.8 x 36 cm This drawing is a good illustration of Jules Boilly's own style, obviously very different from his father's realistic acuity. There is something softer, more velvety, lighter, and we can see it clearly in the way he renders the features of this young man. Julien-Léopold Boilly (30 August 1796 – 14 June 1874), also known as Jules Boilly, was a French artist noted for his album of lithographs Iconographie de l'Institut Royal de France (1820–1821) and his booklet Album de 73 portraits-charge aquarellés des membres de l'Institut (1820) containing watercolor caricatures...
