About

Oil painting on canvas depicting portrait of Nobildonna, French school late 19th century. The painting of extraordinary naturalistic rendering, stands out for the marked photographic accuracy intended to investigate the feminine soul and the position of the woman in a society, like that of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, radiated by an ambiguous and perverse fascination as he headed towards the drama of the First World War. The woman in fact in the nineteenth century lived a period of transition very important, for her is a century of changes and a new awareness, these changes are not the same in all countries and in all social strata, in Italy, for example, The woman maintains a role somewhat subordinate to the male, compared to England or Germany in fact the Italian woman remains in an inferiority not only in the 19th centruy but also in the first half of the 20th century. The battle for emancipation is still long and ubiquitous, but it is precisely in this period that the first seeds of a new, more self-conscious femininity are born. The effigy depicted here with a Chignon hairstyle, while looking directly at the viewer, is a woman of high society, the distinction between the social classes in this period is substantial, because a Noblewoman lived in a completely different situation than one of her peers who belonged to the working class. The woman of the people, for example, was often considered a burden on the family and, like the man, she had different work duties, such as factory work or nursing, while the women of high society, was raised and educated for the sole purpose of becoming a good wife and a good mother. This work, probably performed in the last years of the nineteenth century, is recognized as a participant in that artistic vein of the belle époque, developed between the last years of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the First World War, of which Vittorio Maria Corcos was among the greatest exponents. Important stylistic similarities can be seen with the painter native of Livorno, in particular for the expressive strength and for the detailed rendering of his works in the late 19th century. The canvas is in excellent condition, with a small restoration above the hand of the woman and in a frame coeval to the carved and gilded wood painting, slight defect on the top of the frame. Apocryphal sign on the bottom left. Dimensions : Without Frame Cm 119 x 83,5 With Frame Cm 115 x 118
