Excellent quality and condition mule nude form study possibly for one of Maclise's larger classical compositions. Presented in a neo-classical reed frame. Inscribed verso with faint remains of the name. Measurements: 16" x 16" framed approx Artist Biography: DANIEL MACLISE British, 19th century, male. Born 25 January 1806, in Cork; died 25 April 1870, in London. Painter, watercolourist, draughtsman, illustrator. Historical subjects, military subjects, allegorical subjects, genre scenes, scenes with figures, portraits, landscapes with figures, figures. Murals. Daniel Maclise was of Scottish and Irish origins. He began his career as a banker, but gave it up to study painting at the Cork School of Art. He was also a serious student of anatomy and by the time he arrived in London in July 1827, he already showed talent as a portrait painter. He was a brilliant student at the schools of the Royal Academy and in 1829 won a gold medal entitling him to a travel bursary, which he did not take up. In the same year he exhibited his first painting at the Royal Academy, a genre picture which was very successful. In subsequent years he exhibited portraits which were much admired, and published a series of 81 sketches of important people in Fraser's Magazinefrom 1830 to 1838. His reputation was assured in 1833 with the exhibition of two genre paintings, one at the Royal Academy, the other at the British Institution. He became an associate member of the Royal Academy in 1836 and a full member in 1840. He was also a member of the Stockholm Academy. In 1840 Maclise travelled to Paris. In 1846 he was commissioned to create several decorative works for the new Houses of Parliament in London. These include Spirit of Chivalry, Spirit of Justice, Meeting of Wellington and Blücher at Waterloo and Death of Nelson, a work he finished in 1864. In 1866 he was offered the presidency of the Royal Academy, but he turned it down, just as he had turned down other honours that had been offered to him. The effort required by the paintings he had produced at the Palace of Westminster had considerably affected his health and the death of his sister caused him a sorrow from which he never recovered. Maclise illustrated a number of books, including Moore's Irish Melodies, and made a series of forty-two drawings on the Story of the Norman Conquest.
