Ferdinand I of the Habsburg dynasty, who was crowned emperor in 1558. in a suit of armour lavishly decorated with gold ornaments. The portrait of Ferdinand I on the silver-plated copper plate is in a particularly well particularly well preserved condition. Probably the two most characteristic external features of Ferdinand are his "eagle-like" nose and his "hair growth tending towards reddish". In all pictures of Ferdinand's late period, he is depicted as a widower with a full beard, which he had as a result of the death of his wife Anna, who died in 1547 giving birth of her last child. From the 1550s Ferdinand finally declared Vienna his permanent residence, after having spent the previous years in Prague as King of Hungary and Bohemia.7 Bohemia. On 14 March 1558 he was proclaimed emperor in Frankfurt am Main, succeeding his brother Charles V, who abdicated prematurely.8 On this occasion, a kind of inaugural portrait of Ferdinand was made, in which he is depicted as commander-in-chief of the military. Thus his left hand his left hand demonstratively rests on the helmet in front of him, to show himself as a new as the new, tradition-conscious and resolute head of the army. In the background on the right are Ferdinand's crowns, one of the typical insignia of a ruler. ruler's insignia and serve as a sign of imperial power. The so-called portraits of military rulers are basically half- or three-panel portraits that are half- or three-quarter portraits close to the edge of the picture. What is striking about the present is its small format, which makes it an especially rare piece. rare piece. Normally portraits of rulers are rather large, as an example from 1624 shows. from the year 1624 illustrates this. Anthony van Dyck painted the portrait of the Duke of Savoy Emanuel Philibert, who is also depicted here in gold-decorated armour with a helmet. armour with helmet. The only one comparable in terms of dimensions is a copper engraving from the period with portrait of Charles V, who, like Ferdinand, was depicted in the traditional iconography. iconography. The small-format copper plate with the portrait of the Habsburg emperor is easy to easy to transport and could therefore be found in the possession of much-travelled and and educated aristocrats of Hungarian-Bohemian origin, who could have Bohemian origin, who could have acquired the painting during one of their visits to the imperial residences. imperial residences. The Frame is probably from the 19th Century and in historistical Style.

Three Angels
By Domenico Piola the Elder
Located in New York, NY
Provenance: Robert L. and Bertina Suida Manning, New York, until 1996 Private Collection, USA One of the leading artists in Genoa during the second half of the seventeenth century, Domenico Piola came from a successful family of artists, renowned for their many illusionistic ceiling programs throughout Genoese churches and palaces. A prolific draughtsman and painter, Domenico oversaw an extremely productive studio. In addition to his collaborations with numerous other artists, Domenico also provided many designs for book illustrations and prints that circulated throughout Europe, earning him international exposure and high acclaim in his own day. As Dr. Anna Orlando has indicated (written communication), the present work is an early work by Piola, datable from the late 1640s. At this time the young artist came strongly under the influence of Castiglione and Valerio Castello, while admiring the works of Giulio Cesare Procaccini. Piola’s works from this period are exuberant and fluid, and the artist’s love of portraying children is evident from the angels and putti that populate both his altarpieces and more intimate paintings. The present work depicts three angels...
