Ritratto di Dama, Scuola Inglese Metà 1600 dipinto ad olio su tela in buono stato di conservazione. La giovane donna ritratta a mezzo busto, identificata come Jane Bromley è dipinta con un copricapo da vedova, indossato durante il lutto.
Questa antica opera di scuola inglese ritrae la vedova con lo sguardo assente, l’aspetto ceruleo, etereo, privo di sfondo e di contesto, dall’abbigliamento austero e claustrale impreziosito unicamente da una spilla. Le ciocche di capelli scure che fuoriescono dal copricapo e l’incarnato della donna denunciano la giovane età.
Dalle ricerche iconografiche effettuate siamo riusciti ad identificare la figura di Jane Bromley . Era l’erede di Hallon Manor (successivamente Davenport) e bisnonna di Henry Davenport III (1677–1731), che sposò Barbara Ivory (morta nel 1748). Il copricapo particolare che indossa era tipico delle vedove dell’epoca; il lutto spiega sia l’austerità che l’intensità del dipinto.
Questo antico dipinto di scuola inglese risale alla prima metà del XVII secolo e proviene da una collezione privata lombarda, acquistato in una vendita all’incanto da Christie’s Londra del 28 febbraio 1936, lotto n. 70 venduto come John Riley, ritratto di Lady Uvedale de Tompkyns; si presenta in buono stato entro cornice lignea con decori in pastiglia e finitura a mecca.
Un dipinto analogo è esposto al Fox Talbot Museum a Lacock Abbey nello Wiltshire in Inghilterra, dato in prestito dalla stessa famiglia Davenport dal 1993.
