PORTRAIT OF PRISCILLA, MRS WILLIAM OSBORN half length, oil on canvas,
WILLIAM JACOB BAER (1860-1941) housed in the original early 19th c gilt cavetto frame
The overall size being 94.5 cm x 82 cm (37.5 x 32.5 inches approx)whilst the painting is
75 x 62 cm (29.5 x 24.5 inches approx)
sold with several autograph letters from W J Baer to his client and a photograph of the present portrait on the artist's easel
Provenance: Commissioned in 1927 from the artist by Dorothea, Mrs Harold Bowman Gilroy, nee Osborn, of Fingask Castle, Perthshire
. The sitter, Priscilla A Osborn, nee Jenks, was born on 28th June 1789 and died on 6th September 1853.
This portrait is a copy of the original (whereabouts unknown) of the early 19th century.
The painting is in good condition, having had some restoration and overpainting . In the original early 19th c gilt cavetto frame,
WILLIAM JACOB BAER (1860-1941)
considered the foremost American miniature painter,
was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, January 29, 1860 and died in East Orange, New Jersey in 1941
Baer was a lithographer's apprentice in Cincinnati from 1876 to 1879. During the same period
he attended an evening modelling class at the McMicken School of Design. He continued his training in Munich at the Royal Academy from 1880 to 1884,
studying oil painting ,the Academy purchased one of his watercolours.
In 1913, Baer was elected into the National Academy of Design as an Associate member.
Baer exhibited at the Chicago Worlds Fair of 1893. In New York and at the Paris Exposition of 1900.
He also was a regular exhibitor at the National Academy of Design, N.Y., the Chicago Art Institute and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art
